Social workers connect macro-level policy work with mezzo- and micro-level practice by assessing the needs of communities and individuals to deliver helpful social services. For this assignment, you will analyze a client case to determine the community resources you might recommend if you were the social worker assessing the individual in the scenario.
Scenario
Complete the following steps to prepare for this assignment:
Select one of the following scenarios to use as an example situation for this assignment:
Case 1: Carmen
Carmen is a 33-year-old Hispanic woman who lives with her husband and 9-year-old son. She reluctantly sought assistance after fleeing her home. The client presents with visible, partially healed lacerations and cuts to the face during the intake session. After being asked about her lacerations and cuts, the client reluctantly reports that her husband had physically become violent after coming home intoxicated. She adds that she decided to flee the home after her husband threatened to kill her and her son. The client fears for her child, who remains with the father. Carmen goes on to reveal that she did not report the incident to authorities because she is undocumented and was afraid of being deported.
Case 2: Lian
Lian is a 20-year-old, first-generation, Asian American transgender client who has been residing at a shelter. She reports having run away from home at the age of 17 following her mother’s rejection after her decision to initiate hormone treatment. For several years, Lian was homeless, at times resorting to sex work to survive financially. She reports that she completed several administrative courses funded through a previous agency that she believes will make her a competitive job candidate, but she also feels that her experiences with discrimination continue to present a barrier to securing gainful employment. Lian cannot afford to change her gender identification across key legal documents such as her driver’s license, which, she admits, has created significant issues for her. She reports that she was recently informed by the shelter that she has 30 days to secure a viable long-term housing solution.
Case 3: Lamarcus
Lamarcus is a 21-year-old African American male who was charged with simple possession of marijuana. Lamarcus is a first-generation college student and works full-time. He reports using marijuana recreationally on occasion to help him with anxiety. As a first-time offender, Lamarcus was directed to a pre-trial diversion program that required him to complete several courses related to risks associated with substance abuse. To avoid conviction, the pre-trial diversion program also required that Lamarcus complete community service hours at a local nonprofit serving at-risk youth. On his second day at the nonprofit, Lamarcus overheard an administrator describe one of the teenagers enrolled at the program as “already exhibiting the characteristics of an angry Black man.” Lamarcus reports that he confronted the administrator, who quickly dismissed his claim and expelled him from the program. He is seeking social services to help him avoid being expunged from the pre-trial diversion program.
Identify a social welfare policy affecting the client’s situation and research its effects on oppression and social injustice.
Research services and resources available with in your community and identify 3 programs that could potentially benefit the client.
Deliverable
