Prompt:
Choose ONE of the following prompts for your research paper.
A.  Explore how individuals come to understand themselves and their place in the world by analyzing one character from Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House. pineapple
More specifically, explore the various pressures, influences, and/or stereotypes that shape or attempt to shape a character’s life, perspective, and actions, and also consider if and how the character responds to these factors.
B.  Compare how gender is portrayed in Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” to the role of women in the 21st century.
C.  Choose a common theme such as marriage, death, conflict, male/female relationships, reality vs. illusion, freedom/oppression, or justice, and use that theme to discuss the topic using A Doll Housewith a debatable, analytical thesis statement with key points.
D.  Write what happens next in this story (you can do this in the form of a play, a short story, a chapter, etc). You must do research to see the options women of Nora’s stature would have at this time in society and incorporate that into your creative story.
**If you choose this option, you will also need to include a 1-2 page reflection of what research you did and how that information influenced how you envisioned Nora’s story continuing.  Make sure to include a Works Cited page to show your sources.
In developing your analysis, you must refer to A Doll House and outside sources; you must use direct quotations from these sources and from Ibsen’s play.
Although this assignment asks you to do outside reading, your main task remains the same: to produce an argument of your own drawing upon a literary text. The outside sources are meant to help you develop and deepen your own interpretation of A Doll House, not to substitute for it.
For this essay you will also do some outside research – you should use our library databases available from Harbor College:  http://libguides.lahc.edu/library (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (Links to an external site.) (http://libguides.lahc.edu/library) to add extra depth and evidence to your analysis of the themes and issues in this play and/or sources available online.  These can be sources to help define specific symbols, and/or the story.  Sources NOT allowed are:  Wikipedia, Shmoop, SparkNotes, a blog, etc. (sources cited in this essay must be from a published website, article, journal, etc). You can also use Google Scholar but make sure at least one source is from one of our academic databases from Harbor.

•    Arguable Thesis
•    MLA formatted (5 points will be automatically deducted if your essay is not MLA formatted)
