This is the first of two written assignments for the course and is due Friday May 17 (Week 7). In this short essay (500 words) the student will choose one site that is listed on either the National Registry of Historic PlacesLinks to an external site. or the UNESCO World Heritage ListLinks to an external site.. Imagine that either the National Park Service or UNESCO is considering removing this site from the Registry or World Heritage List, which would reduce the available resources for conservation and remove any protections from the site with regards to development – for a Historic Place this refers to federal and state laws, and for UNESCO refers to both local legislation and international agreements. You are writing a public comment to be submitted to a hearing on the subject, which will be read into the record when the committee meets to make its final decision. Using persuasive, formal writing (first person okay) make an argument for why this site is relevant and worthy of ongoing stewardship.
Requirements The essay should be 500 words, not including  title, header, bibliography, etc.
The essay should make a case for relevance. What makes the site important, and why is it worth preserving? The student should incorporate at least one course reading in making their case and include a bibliography of all material referenced in text.
About the Registry Various historical buildings, parks, features, and other important places are listed as historic sites “as part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archaeological resources.” If a site is listed on the National Registry, it becomes part of the National Park Service and receives access to additional curatorial support and resources. States, tribes, federal agencies, and private individuals work with State Historic Preservation Offices to nominate the relevant site using a process outlined in the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act.
About UNESCO The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established by international treaty in 1972 in which it recognized heritage to be defined as “our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations.” A site listed on the UNESCO world heritage site enjoys additional protections from looting/development under international law. Note that the World Heritage list includes both natural and cultural resources, so for this assignment you must chose a site made by humans.
NOTA BENE: You are not being asked to defend the websites associated with these institutions but rather a real-world site that is listed by the NPS or UNESCO. You only have to write about one site from one of these institutions. To reiterate, do not write about retaining the websites themselves. Remember that UNESCO also lists natural wonders so make sure that you are writing about a human-made site.
