Suggested Approach:
Read the entire case and the exhibits first;
Assess what is really important to each of the stakeholders;
Consider the development process as presented in this course.
Understand who are the decision-makers: who can make decisions on the proposed project, or decisions within the project;
Decide what will ultimately determine success or failure for Disney; and
Think about what strategy you would employ if different from what is or seems to be suggested by the case.
A Memorandum should include the following analysis:
Establish or describe the material aspects or context of the case; and
Identify and discuss the primary stakeholders, and describe what is most important to each of them, and what are their motivations.
Analyze the following issues:
Disney essentially followed the same development strategy in Virginia that had worked so well in Florida. Indeed, as it had done in Florida, Disney again won ringing endorsements from the state legislature and the governor. Nevertheless, the company was dealt a very expensive embarrassing defeat in Virginia. Why?
What are the opportunities, resources and barriers that Disney had in Virginia?
What was the nature and source of the power of those opposing Disney America?
If you were Disney, what would have be your biggest concern(s) and why?
Evaluate whether, and the extent to which Disney did a good job in aligning the interests of the various stakeholders or parties. Other than not attempting this project in the first place, what might Disney have done differently to achieve a better result from this point of view?
Evaluate the effectiveness of Disney’s decisions on the major issues that the company faces.
Describe the strategies that you would have used, or the decisions that you would have made, if they are different from what is stated in the case.
What different roles did the media play in this controversy and how did that affect the public (and private) negotiations that were taking place.
Format of Assignment:
Prepare a written business memorandum, with a 3 page maximum (exclusive of any exhibits);
MS Word/Google Docs in 1.5 line space, Times New Roman font, using a 12-point font, and 1 inch margins;
