Assessment 3: Short Essay, due Friday May 17
The second and third assessments in this subject, the Annotated Bibliography and the Short Essay, are designed to work together as a pairing. Together they form the Portfolio, as described in the subject learning guide, pp 10-11. Earlier in the semester you chose which of the three topics for 2024 you would study:
Public policy and the Pandemic
The Voice referendum: why did it fail?
Australia’s fraught relations with China
The Third Assessment, the Short Essay, forms the second part of the Portfolio. It should be about 750 words, and is due at midnight, Friday May 17, through Turnitin.
For the second assessment you conducted and wrote-up a brief annotated bibliography of publications in the area of your chosen theme. There you were summarising the different points of view in a number of selected publications in your area.
In the third assessment you will draw upon the research and reading you did for the second assessment to respond to the questions/problems in the Portfolio document using your own words. Here you are presenting your own point of view, grounded in the facts, evidence and expert opinions from your sources.
Note that you do not have to make direct use of all of the sources from your annotated bibliography. And you should feel free to add new sources as they come to hand.
The tasks for this assessment are very simple, and are listed in the Learning Guide and the Portfolio document, as follows:
The Indigenous Voice Referendum: Why Did it Fail?: write a short essay of 750 words or less presenting your own reasoned point of view on the strengths and weaknesses of the ‘Voice’ as a vehicle for reconciliation, drawing upon the sources from your annotated bibliography. Answer the following question: what in your view are the most important reasons the referendum failed?
Public Policy and the Pandemic: write a short essay of 750 words or less presenting your own reasoned point of view on the strengths and weaknesses of public policy during Covid, drawing upon the sources from your annotated bibliography. Answer the following question: what did Australian public policy, nationally and at state level, get right and wrong in relation to Covid?
Australia’s Fraught Relations with China: write a short essay of 750 words or less presenting your own reasoned point of view on the future of the Australia-China economic and political relationship, drawing upon literature from the same area or areas you studied for Part 1. Answer the following question: is it possible for Australia to balance Chiona’s status as our major trading partner with the fact that China is not an ally, and may potentially be a foe?
As you’ll recall from the second assessment, Lauren Tupper from the Library has kindly recorded a video presentation to assist you with researching and reading for the portfolio. This video, and the PowerPoints from it, are still relevant to the Short Essay:
