Ruiz proposes that if we live by the four agreements, we will experience a spiritual awakening that will lead us to personal freedom. Undertaking the principles in this book is akin to taking a spiritual quest — a quest to be a spiritual warrior — a quest to live a more fulfilling life. Adopting the four agreements will lead to freedom from fear and illusion; in essence, we will learn to win the war over the negative and harmful beliefs we harbor in our minds.
The Four Agreements are:
Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.
Don’t Take Anything Personally: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
Don’t Make Assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
Always Do Your Best: Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.
For your 1000-word analysis, please choose ONE relationship or issue in your life and apply ONE of the four agreements to that ONE choice. Explain how this relationship or issue has been negatively influencing your life and describe how your life will be positively enhanced by dealing with this issue using one of the four agreements.
Break up your ideas into multiple paragraphs. Include an introduction (mention the agreement and issue/relationship), several body paragraphs (describing and detailing your situation), and a conclusion (state how applying the agreement has/will change your life). Late essays and essays that are written as one paragraph will not earn higher than a C.
