Phase I:
The aim of the Critical Educational Autobiography is to explore key experiences, inside and outside of school, that have shaped who you are as a person, and your journey into teaching.
Course Objectives

CLO5 Examine education in relation to differing value orientations and assumptions about schooling and education.
Course Connection
This course’s important focus is understanding the intersection of culture, society and schools, classrooms, and individuals. This assignment provides an opportunity for you to reflect on yourself as a culture bearer and on the influence of education in your life. We each have a narrative that defines us to date. That narrative has many aspects and is your story. In your writing, address the following as your story to date. Use the questions below to build your narrative.
Please discuss the following in your Critical Autobiography:
Identity: How do you identify with regards to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, language, and/or ability? What privileges do you have and/or barriers do you face because of these identities (both inside and outside of school)?
What are some key life (out-of-school) events that shaped your views about your social, cultural and academic identities?
Key Educational Experiences: What are some key educational experiences that shaped your views about teaching and learning, the role of the educator and the purpose of education?
Identify and discuss some positive AND negative learning/teaching experiences and how they have shaped you as a learner and inform the type of educator you hope to become.
Social/Political Context: Discuss some of the major social & political movements/events that occurred during your schooling years. These could be local, state and/or national. How, if at all did they shape or impact conversations about/within education? How, if at all, did they impact your experiences within schools and/or your vision for yourself as an educator or in your future roles?
Journey into Teaching/Your Chosen Career: Who/What shaped your beliefs about the goals of education, the role of teachers and your vision for yourself as an educator?
What key people impacted your experiences as a learner and peaked you interest in becoming a teacher or entering your chosen career?
What do you hope to accomplish as an educator/in your future role?
It is important to dig deeply and critically reflect in order to identify some of
the internalized messages and beliefs that may be impacting your views on teaching and learning. However, only share what you feel comfortable sharing.
Form
Your autobiography may be completed in any of the following formats, however you must explain at some point why you chose to present your narrative in this way:
Written Paper (Could be a straightforward writing of your story or a more creative short story format as if someone else was telling your story)
PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides, FlipGrid or some other similar format of a presentation
Video (Either sitting and talking straight into the camera or a more documentary- style or creative film) or Audio (think podcast)
Poem, Song, Cartoon, Drawing or some other artistic representation (May require a short written piece to explain)
Phase II:
Purpose
This assignment aims to determine your educational philosophy, whether you’ll be a classroom teacher or not. Our viewpoints on the purpose of education, how schools should run, the role of the teacher, and the roles of students are among many of the questions that are hotly debated regularly. How you philosophically “see” education provides you with a lens to examine all aspects of education.

CLO4. Reflect on the role of education and schooling on the construction of social and cultural identities.
CLO5. Examine education in relation to differing value orientations and assumptions about schooling and education.
Course Connection
Throughout the course, you will examine the various narratives that are a part of the educational landscape. Philosophies, purpose, laws, and community stakeholders try to solve issues within and about education from various philosophical ideals. Whether you will be a classroom teacher or are just a member of the community that supports public education, it is vital to examine your philosophical practices and beliefs. Your philosophical beliefs are evident in how you view the world.
Form
For this assignment, you will complete the Sadker and Zittleman Philosophical SurveyLinks to an external site.. Your results will indicate which philosophical ideology you are most aligned with. Once you have that information, complete the following:
What philosophical ideology are you?
Define the philosophical ideology in a manner that is understandable for you.
Reflect on what these results mean about how you view education beyond classroom practices.
What might you tell your friends and family when they ask you, what you think about education today?
Phase III:
This assignment will ask you to use the IRIS module to read about and complete activities that will give you a better understanding of classroom management and the elements of a behavior management plan. Follow the directions below to complete this Portfolio assignment and submit it AS ONE DOCUMENT.

Go to the following website https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/beh1/ This module is titled Classroom Behavior Management (Part 1) Key Concepts and Foundational Practices. To begin, click on “Begin” at the bottom of the page.
Begin at the “Challenge” video and work your way through the entire module. Take notes, watch the videos and read the information provided in the module. HINT: It may be a good idea to review the questions in the assessment you have to submit so you can take notes as you go through the module.
When you get to page 3: Cultural Influences on Behavior, you will find the survey. you need to complete towards the bottom of that page. Be sure to read this page before taking the survey so that you have an understanding of what the survey questions mean. When you are done, click the “Finish” button and arrive at the feedback page. Take a screenshot of your results page. You will include it as part of this assignment.
