Film Genres — Final Short Answer and Essay Exam
Exam Guidelines:
• NO AI: Do not use Grammarly, ChatGPT, Gemini, Chegg, or any other AI-driven “revision” tool. You may use
Google translate and MS Word’s Spell/Grammar Check only.
• Do not plagiarize: Your exam will be scanned by Turn-it-in. If you are found to have plagiarized, you will
earn an F on the exam and the infraction will be reported to IVC’s Disciplinary OLicer.
• *New writing only: Do not turn in any work that you’ve already submitted. Some overlap is to be expected,
but you must write new material. It may help to cite diLerent examples.
• No outside sources: You may only utilize assigned readings and lectures.
• Proofread: Proofread your work to catch errors and fine-tune your work.
Part 1 – Short Answer: Write roughly one paragraph in response to 2 of the 4 questions below. Identify each using the corresponding numbers below. 50 points each, 100pts total.
1. Formal properties: Televisual style (narrative, mise-en-scene, videography, editing, sound) has been drawn from the medium’s elder sibling: film. Explain at least one way television has modified film methods for its purposes. Utilize Butler and lectures on form (units 7, 8, and 10).
2. Representation: Why is determining “good” and “bad” representation so complicated? What are some conflicting views of “good” representation? Rely on units 12 and 13.
3. Revisiting TVIV: Return to unit 2’s coverage of TV’s four eras. Explain how content from subsequent units elucidates the qualities of TVIV with greater depth. Cite specific concepts or terms that demonstrate TVIV beyond the overview provided in unit 2.
4. Authorship Revolution: Explain how TV has morphed from a one-to-many medium to a (somewhat) many- to-many medium. Consider discussing uses of interactivity, social media integration, game adaptations, user-generated content, fan communities, fan artwork/criticism, among others. Refer to Butler’s Chapter 1 for a refresher on the one-to-many, broadcast era. Cite specific units in your answer.
Part 2 – Essay: Read the following closely. 200pts possible.
• Length/word count: 3-4 pages (750-1000+ words).
• Standard essay structure: Use the standard academic essay format: introduction, thesis statement,
supporting paragraphs, and conclusion.
• No summaries: You do not need to provide a summary, although some explanatory info is acceptable.
Critical Formal Analysis: Formal analysis entails examining how narrative, mise-en-scene, videography, editing, and sound are employed to create meaning, mood, and narrative arcs. For your final essay, write a critical formal analysis of the streaming-era show of your choosing*. You must utilize content from a minimum of 2 of the 5 units highlighted above. Refer to and make use of specific terms and concepts from the readings and lectures. In addition to examining formal qualities, you must also incorporate at least one concept from any of the units on streaming-era phenomena (i.e., most units).
Example: One could analyze The Handmaid’s Tale for its allegorical critique of contemporary politics by:
• studying gender commentary evident in the mise-en-scene, specifically setting and costumes.
• examining narrative style for gender commentary (such as the use of flashbacks which juxtapose
future dystopia with present-day women’s rights).
• identifying streaming-era features, such as the “quality” and “high culture” aesthetics and the use of
narrative complexity. Important notes:
• Shows*: You may write about streaming-era shows assigned in prior units, or others found on your own. You may not re-analyze shows you’ve already written about.
• Themes/meanings: While summaries are not necessary, it will help to establish the program’s main themes and take-aways before diving into stylistic details and streaming-era features.
o Example:OnecoulddescribeHandmaid’sdystopianfutureinwhichwomen’srightshavebeen largely eradicated. With that in hand, next steps would involve explaining how aesthetic choices create this dystopian future.
• Define terms & concepts: Your primary goal is to demonstrate knowledge of course materials. Defining and/or citing terms before using them is an eLective way of ensuring that reading knowledge is evident.
• Images: Images are always helpful but not required. If used they must be embedded into the document itself, not added as a separate upload.
