Please make sure you understand every instruction before you bid this assignment
**Before beginning this assignment, please watch the short Panopto recording on signal and non-signal phrases. Doing so will make completing this assignment much faster and easier. You will use the research you found from your project or from your second paper for this assignment. It is your choice. If you elect to use your project, you will likely need to make modifications to your original citations to mirror the examples in this exercise.

In MLA formatting, you always have two options when citing a source. You must use one or the other. Your two choices are as follows:
1. Use a signal phrase or
2. Use a non-signal phrase, also known as a parenthetical citation
Signal Phrase Example:  Johnson argues that, “The use of school uniforms reduces bullying by 20%” (14). The action verb is “argues” and the page number is included at the end in parenthesis if a page # is provided. MLA requires a present tense action verb in signal phrases. Note that when the author’s name is used in the sentence (this is called a signal phrase), then it is omitted in the parenthesis at the end.
Non-Signal Phrase Example:  “The use of school uniforms reduces bullying by 20%” (Johnson 14). Instead of using the author’s name in the body of the paper, it is used in parenthesis at the end. No punctuation is used between the author and page #)
Note: Either method can be used whether using quotations or paraphrasing. Remember that your paper should be a combination of both direct quoting and paraphrasing.
Read/Study  the following links on signal and non-signal phrases.  You will not be able to complete this exercise successfully, if you don’t take the time to read these links closely. Your grade on this assignment will be impacted by how closely you follow MLA formatting and the directions for this exercise.

To complete this exercise, use your research from your project or your upcoming final paper. Mirror the examples below. If you don’t have the exact research or combination of authors, it is ok to make up some information. In other words, if you don’t have a source with multiple authors, go ahead and make up some author’s names as this is just for practice. To complete this assignment, complete the following:
1. From your own research, demonstrate the use of a  signal phrase using a direct quote and one author. For example: Jones argues, ” Intermittent Fasting has shown both negative and positive outcomes” (3). This is an example. You will use your own research for this one and all that follow.
2. Demonstrate the use of a  signal phrase using a direct quote and two authors.
3. Demonstrate the use of a  signal phrase using a direct quote and multiple authors.
4. Demonstrate the use of a  signal phrase using a direct quote and no author-use the title of the article.
5. Demonstrate the use of an indirect quote (You are quoting an author who was quoted in another author’s work)
6. Demonstrate the use of a non-signal phrase using a paraphrase and one author. For example: Nutrition is the key to a long and healthy life (Jones 4).
7. Demonstrate the use of a non-signal phrase using a paraphrase and two authors.
8. Demonstrate the use of a non-signal phrase using a paraphrase and multiple authors.
9. Demonstrate the use of a non-signal phrase using a paraphrase and no author-use article title.
10. Demonstrate your correct usage of a block quote and proper MLA formatting.
