This paper will begin with a 300 word Problem Analysis and
Identification, sent to me in Memo format. In small groups,
students will identify a campus or community-based problem. They will
then research the issue and produce a range of possible solutions,
including plans of action for each. This project includes a presentation
of preliminary research findings for each issue. The final written
project should be 1000 words MAXIMUM. Must include at least 4 outside
research sources (interviews and/or surveys must account for one of the
sources), using a citation style appropriate to the discipline.
This project has a very specific format. Details in the next post in the thread.
Teacher Instructions:
In addition to the basic format outlined above, there are specific
steps to follow for the Group project. First, analyze the problem and
propose to research it with a memo:

Gain agreement on the problem definition.
Understand the root causes—the problem behind the problem.
Identify the stakeholders and the users.
Define the solution system boundary (defined below)
Propose a solution.
So:
Step 1, write a memo to me documenting and defining the problem (Step 1) DO NOT PROPOSE A SOLUTION YET
Step 2, after my response, meet and put together a full analysis and solution, following steps 2-5
Step 3, in groups, present the full project to the class (upload a powerpoint presentation)
Step 4, submit Final Document
The solution system boundary involves limiting the
solution you are trying to change. Thinking of the solution as a system
is important, because you solutions will have many moving parts. Ask
yourself questions like this to help limit your solution.
Who will supply, use, or remove information from the system?
Who will operate the system?
Who will perform any system maintenance?
Where will the system be used?
Where does the system get its information?
What other external systems will interact with the system?
What funding, expertise, and other constraints will be placed on our system?
First Product: Problem analysis memo (300 words):
A problem analysis memo (which you also might call a memo of
understanding) establishes your understanding of a particular problem by
analyzing its various facets. Such a memo can be helpful for a several
reasons.
The very act of putting together a
document forces you to think through the problem. By developing a
written analysis, you’re likely to recognize facets of the problem that
you would have missed had you rushed in without preparation.
Such a memo helps establish that
you and others share similar understandings of a situation. It helps you
ensure that you’re doing what your instructor and colleagues expect.
The memo also helps you start to
create a paper trail for the problem. It lets you begin to create a
record of your work and thinking in regard to a particular situation.
