Assignment
Document and analyze the language use of a specific community, using at least three members of that community to draw qualitative and quantitative conclusions.
STEP ONE:
Decide which community you will study. This should be a community you have easy access to, either in person or online.
STEP TWO:
Research your chosen community using the online Lone Star library databases. You must include at least one source from the library in your case study report.
STEP THREE:
Observe members of your chosen community (with their permission) and take notes using the Field Observation chart available in D2L. You will observe three members of the community so you will need to complete three Field Observation charts. Try to find a setting where your participant will use language naturally. You will collect both qualitative and quantitative data.
STEP FOUR:
Organize your observations and useful supporting evidence from your library research using the Case Study Outline available in D2L. You may need to conduct more field observations or find more secondary sources to complete each section of the outline.
STEP FIVE:
Construct a draft of your case study using your outline as a guide. Keep in mind that the central focus of your finished essay should be a clear analysis of the ways in which your chosen community uses language. Use these questions to guide your analysis:
What makes this community’s use of language unique?
What language practices do the members of this community share?
How does language use differ within this community?
Does this community engage in code-switching? If so, when and why?
How does their language use reflect the values of this
