Over the last seven weeks, we have completed two modules that focused on sentence combining (Module 3 and 6). Sentence combining is a way to diversify and improve your writing styles on a sentence level. For academic writing, we want to be able to have a quiver of stylistic choices to best engage our audience, and this test is meant to assess how well you understood methods 1-11 in Combine and Compose.

Part 1: Cinderella (from Combine and Compose )
In Combine and Compose, you will see a sentence combining test on page 77. Do not complete the entire test. You are only responsible for completing #76-90 on page 85 and 86 in the text. For this portion of the assignment, combine using ANY method (sentence combining methods 1-11), making sure the method you choose is both logical and correct. There may be more than one correct method.
This test will assess how well you understood methods 1-11, and each question is worth 4 points. Each sentence cluster will ask you to combine the sentences using the method it demands.

Combine and Compose pg. 85, #76-79
The two wicked stepsisters answered the door. They were stunned to see the prince standing there.
He asked them.
They wanted to try on the slipper.
78, He couldn’t even get in the door.
The one stepsister pushed the other out of the way and grabbed the slipper from the prince.
She crammed and jammed her big foot into the slipper. Her toes bled.
Combine and Compose pg. 86, #80-90
The other sister tried it on. It didn’t fit either.
Out of the corner of his eye, the prince spotted another young woman.
She was sweeping the hearth.
She looked at the slipper.
She saw it was made out of glass.
He asked her to try it on.
He made the stepsisters angry.
Cinderella was both nervous and excited. Cinderella obliged the prince.
The slipper was a perfect fit.
It made the prince embrace his true love.
The stepsisters gasped in surprise. The Prince kissed his true love.
He kissed Cinderella.
No longer would Cinderella be condemned to a horrible fate. It was a life of poverty and loneliness.
He picked her up in his arms. He lifted her atop his horse. His horse was a mighty steed.
Together the happy couple rode off.
They rode off towards the gleaming palace.
The couple was Cinderella and Prince Charming.
They lived full of happiness ever after.
Full of happiness ever after is a true fairy tale ending.
Part 2: Create your own
For Part 2 of the final, create your own original sentences about any topic—for example, the Lakers, the zoo, school, work, politics, monsters—using the specified method(s) below. The only requirement is that all the sentences you write must focus on just one topic. Do not copy sentences from the book. Punctuation counts.
Write a simple sentence with paired adverbs (Method 1).
Write a simple sentence with a series of prepositional phrases (Method 2 /Method 11).

Write a compound sentence using the fatcat “consequently” (Method 4).
Write a complex sentence using any wwww.subabeauti in the beginning of the sentence. Dependent cause first, then independent clause. (Method 5).
Write a complex sentence using any wwww.subabeauti in the middle of the sentence. Independent clause first then dependent clause. (Method 5).
Write a complex sentence using “who” in the middle of the sentence (Method 6).
Write a complex sentence using an appositive in the middle of the sentence (Method 7).
Write a simple sentence using a verbal phrase in the beginning of a sentence—ing, —ed, or to opening (Method 10).
Write a compound/complex sentence (Method 3 and Method 5).
How to Submit:

Each sentence will be worth 4 points. Please number each of the questions you complete, and divide your response into “part 1” (#76-90 in Combine and Compose) and “part 2” (Create your own) in your document.
