Part 1: Calculations Your facility will start a cleaning operation in an open-ba

Part 1: Calculations
Your facility will start a cleaning operation in an open-bay room using a styrene dip tank. You estimate the operation will use 1.5 gallons of styrene each 8-hour shift. You determine the current general air distribution of the room is moderate, but the room layout does not currently allow dilution air to pass directly through the area above the dip tank, creating a zone of contamination over the tank.
You have been tasked with determining the minimum airflow requirement for a dilution ventilation system to maintain the concentration of styrene at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 100 ppm. You will find the formula for the calculation in the Ventilation Systems Calculations PowerPoint presentation for the unit. Please note that the PowerPoint Presentation includes notes. You need to calculate the number of pints per hour using the above information.
The steps are listed below:
For the purposes of the room setup, assume standard temperature and pressure (STP).
You need to research the chemical to find the specific gravity and molecular weight.
You must choose a value for K based on the information provided.
Provide an explanation for the value you choose for K.
Calculate the minimum airflow for a dilution ventilation system for the work area. Show all your calculations.
Include a recommendation for the placement of any supply and exhaust fans in the work area.
Provide your opinion about the feasibility of providing the calculated level of dilution airflow in the work area.
Part 2: Recommendations
Your second task is to recommend a local exhaust ventilation system for the operation as a second option. The dip tank has the following dimensions: 2 feet (width) by 5 feet (length) by 2 feet (depth). Based on the recommendations in the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) manual, you decide that a capture velocity of 100 ft/min would be adequate for the operation.
Specify which hood type you would use, the size of the hood opening, and the duct diameter you would recommend for the operation. State the distance you would place the hood opening from the work. Calculate the required airflow for that size hood and the capture velocity of 100 ft/min. The formula for the calculation can also be found in the presentation for the unit. Be specific about where the hood will be placed in relation to the dip tank and worker and what treatment, if any, will be used for the exhaust. If you will not recommend any treatment for the exhaust, state why you do not believe treatment is necessary and where you would release the exhausted air.
Your completed assignment (Parts 1 and 2 combined) must be at least three pages in length, not counting a title page and a reference page. An abstract is not needed. Include at least three reliable sources. One of the sources must be from the CSU Online Library. Use correct APA Style for in-text citations and the reference page.
