Summary and Response Essay THIS WILL BE A 5-6 PARAGRAPH ESSAY. Your essay will be based on Skills Unit 7 Reading 1 The First Industrial Revolution pages 193-195 OR Reading 2 Glass is Humankind’s Most Important Material pages 202-204. You must decide which reading you will use for this essay. Read it thoroughly several times and take notes on it before you begin your essay.
Introductory Paragraph-Create an introductory paragraph that catches the reader’s attention based on the reading’s overall main idea. You may want to introduce the idea in the unit question: How do new discoveries and inventions change the world? This paragraph should include the name of the article you have chosen and the author’s name. Become more specific in this paragraph and lead your reader to your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should include, in either a direct or an indirect way, the main ideas of the article that you will discuss in your response paragraphs.
First Body Paragraph: Summary Summarize your reading. If you need to make your summary more than one paragraph, you can make it your first two body paragraphs. Be sure to use good summarizing techniques:
Do not add your opinion.
Only discuss main ideas. While you must include most of the main ideas of the article, do not forget to also include the 2 main ideas that you will respond to in your other body paragraphs.
Write the summary using the same organization and discuss main ideas in the same order as the reading.
Paraphrase ideas and use your OWN WORDS. A short quote is acceptable.
Make the summary much shorter than the original. As mentioned above, it can be only 1-2 paragraphs.
Second and Third Body Paragraphs: Response Paragraphs (or third and fourth body paragraphs if your summary is 2 paragraphs). Each body paragraph should be at least 8 sentences.
Choose two of the main ideas from your summary. Write about one in each of your 2 response paragraphs.
Your topic sentence for each paragraph can mention that the main idea is one pointoned above in topic sentences should be short and to the
in the supporting detal for each paragrapn, you shoud have a more detaile
discussion of the main idea.
Your response to the main idea should include giving your opinions or personal reactions to the main idea. You can do this WITHOUT saying “I think” or “I believe”. Simply write what it is you believe or think as the authority.
Discuss the main idea in relation to the unit question: How do new discoveries and inventions change the world?
You may want to include the reason you chose to discuss this particular main idea. Is it more important or interesting than the others? Do you have stronger feelings about it?

Concluding paragraph Start with a concluding transition. Be sure to leave your readers with some concluding thoughts to think about.
