As a teacher, managing your classroom will be more than just rules and procedures. You will need to cultivate a positive learning environment that maximizes student engagement and minimizes conflict and disruption. This will involve actions such as modeling positive interactions and setting expectations; being strategic in the way you arrange your classroom; lesson planning and effective instruction; and using diverse instructional materials.
Preparation
Prior to Week 4, schedule, observe, and interview a teacher about classroom management.
Review the Classroom-Management Observation and Teacher Interview Guide in advance and use it to take notes during your field experience.
Assessment Deliverable
Using your observation and interview notes, prepare a 10- to 12-slide presentation in which you summarize your field experience observations. While the teacher you observed won’t actually be receiving this summary presentation, create it as if you were going to present the presentation about your observations to that teacher.
Address the following topics in your presentation:
Classroom arrangement
Describe how the classroom was arranged and explain how this arrangement strategy may or may not help with classroom management.
Classroom expectations and interactions
Describe how the teacher addressed expectations to students and how the students responded or interacted with the teacher and their peers.
Explain whether the teacher encouraged or modeled mutual respect and any evidence of positive reinforcement. Provide examples.
Instruction
Describe how the teacher’s instruction engaged students and addressed diverse learners’ knowledge, language, background, and development.
Explain whether the teacher linked prior academic learning and/or experiences to the lesson. Provide examples.
Materials, technology, and diversity
Identify any resources, materials, or technology used throughout the lesson and explain whether they promoted critical thinking, self-evaluation, or connection to real-world issues.
If technology was not used, indicate how it can be incorporated to support student learning.
Explain whether the lesson and materials addressed diverse cultures, backgrounds, or learning styles.
Reflection
Indicate what you learned from this field experience and how you will apply it to your teaching practice.
Cite 3 to 5 references to support your summative assessment and format citations and references according to APA guidelines.
Formatting Requirements
Include the following components in your presentation:
Comprehensive speaker notes for your slides or recorded voiceover in your presentation
Graphics or images to make it visually appealing
A title slide
A references slide for any sources and/or images cited
