The Silver Lining playbook Movie/book
“The Silver Linings Playbook” by Matthew Quick, follows the journey of Pat Solitano, a former high school history teacher who had been married to Nikki. After a violent incident with his ex-wife, Pat was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and admitted to a psychiatric institution, which he refers to as “the bad place.” Four years later, his mother finally takes him back home where he is determined to win back his estranged wife. Pat’s unwavering belief in silver linings drives him to work tirelessly towards his goal, hoping for a happy ending to his life.
After being admitted to a psychiatric institution, it was discovered that Pat has been struggling with bipolar disorder. This had greatly impacted his behaviour and relationships, particularly his marriage to Nikki. Their relationship was plagued by frequent arguments and outbursts of anger. One of the primary reasons for Pat’s admission to a psychiatric institution was due to an extreme violent outburst. This outburst was triggered by the discovery of his ex-wife’s affair, which almost resulted in the death of her lover.
Upon his release from “the bad place” Pat’s actions seemed to revolve solely around gaining Nikki’s approval. He began obsessively exercising and reading books that he knew she would approve of. This behaviour is not healthy or normal, as Pat is trying to please someone who will never come back to him. He should prioritise his own happiness instead of trying to please someone else. This preoccupation with his ex-wife’s desires may also negatively affect his relationships with others, causing frustration among his family who only want to see him get better. But his determination to win back Nikki drives him to relentlessly pursue his goal, despite the reality of their broken relationship. It is a story of resilience, but also highlights the damaging impact of fixating on a past that cannot be changed.
The DSM-5 classifies Bipolar disorder into two distinct categories Bipolar I and Bipolar II. This mental illness is characterised by extreme fluctuations in mood, energy levels, and behaviour. These shifts can range from manic episodes, characterised by elevated and euphoric moods, to depressive episodes, where individuals experience intense feelings of sadness and hopelessness. One way to bat bipolar disorder is by therapy and medication. This is the most common bipolar disorder.
One of Pat’s manic episodes that exemplify his elevated and euphoric moods occurred when he walked into the therapy office and heard “Songbird” by Kenny G playing on the radio. Instantly, Pat reacted by jumping out of his seat, screaming, kicking chairs, flipping the coffee table, and throwing magazines against the wall. He yelled, “It’s not fair! I won’t tolerate any tricks! I refuse to be treated like an emotional lab rat!” (found on page 19 of the ebook). One technique Pat employs to address his fear of Kenny G is to shut his eyes, hum a single note, and quietly count to ten, clearing his mind. Whenever he encounters Kenny G’s music, he repeats this process. This coping mechanism serves as a valuable tool for managing anger and emotions, facilitating a calm response amidst overwhelming feelings.
With the constant therapy sessions and the acceptance of medication without spinning the pills out, Pat is able to have a normal life. This is reflected with his conversations and going to football games. The treatment of Pats bipolar was successful as he was more able to deal with people.
In Matthew Quick’s novel “The Silver Linings Playbook,” the narrative skillfully navigates themes of mental health, family dynamics, and personal growth through the compelling relationship between Pat and Tiffany. However, the movie adaptation’s portrayal has sparked debates, as it strives to destigmatize mental illness yet faces criticism for oversimplification and romanticization, possibly perpetuating stereotypes.
