Papers Requirements: Papers not meeting satisfying these requirements may be returned.
Papers inconsistent with UIS Academic Integrity Policy will receive a score of zero.
• Clearly address a paper topic selected from those supplied below.
• Include your name and word count excluding title, footnotes, and bibliography.
• Use a 12-point font, double-space, and allow 1” margins. You may use any standard
format for citations/bibliography.
• Only draw upon philosophical content from this course or from primary sources directly
relevant to course content (for instance, Mill’s On Utilitarianism). It is fine to use outside
sources to support empirical claims or examples.
• Make at least one useful and relevant reference to an assigned primary source.
• Include clear citations for all ideas, concepts, arguments, and paraphrases included.
Review UIS standard for Academic Integrity if you have any doubts. Any standard format
for citations is acceptable.
• Do not start with a superfluous, probably false, or empty claim, such as: “Since the
dawn of time…,” “Humanity has always….,” “People often debate ethical theories.”
• The use of spell checkers or grammar checkers is fine. The use of AI such as ChatGPT is
not permitted, counts as cheating, and will earn a course grade of F.
Choose a topic on which you have something to contribute to the debate (see topics below).
Your job is to put forward a coherent argument for your position based on your own careful
thinking on the philosophical arguments and positions we’ve considered. This assignment
