PH 302 EXTRA CREDIT
SYNOPSIS ON TOPIC OF INTEREST
EXTRA CREDIT – Successful completion of this extra credit assignment can add up to 8 percentage point to your grade. If your final grade for the class is an 84% and you received 8% additional from the extra credit, then your final grade would be a 92% or an A-.
Important to note that extra credit assignments grades will be based on the following: grammar, following directions, depth of discussion of selected article and overall effort.
Please email me to notify of your intent to do the extra credit assignment.
DUE DATE: 5/12/24 by midnight
Turn in paper by email.
- Conduct a search for recently published scientific article(s) on an epidemiology topic that interest you.
Below are some examples of topics and links to corresponding articles for that topic:
- Epidemiology of Diabetes in the US.
- Worldwide Cancer Patterns –
- Prevalence of HPV
- Cardiovascular Risk Factors
NOTE: Article must be published within the last 12 months.
You may decide you want to write a synopsis on more than one article related to your topic and that is ok.
Once you have identified a publication(s) write a brief synopsis (summary) of the article. You are welcome to run your paper idea by me before you start writing your synopsis.

- Question to answer in your paper (Note: not all questions may apply to the paper you chose):
What was the main purpose of the paper? What is your paper examining/describing?
What were they trying to look at? What gaps are identified? What was the hypothesis (if one is stated)?
What methodology was used in the study? (What study design was used (e.g., case control, cross-sectional)? Did they look at incidence rates, test sensitivity…etc)
What population did they focus on (e.g., was it focused on a certain geographical part of the world or a certain age group).
What type of analysis did they do?
What did the authors find? What were the results?
What are the limitations mentioned in the study. Any potential biases? What recommendations do you have to address these biases.
Did the authors have any recommendations for future research?
What are your recommendations based on what you read.
