In the first folder presented in Unit 4, you were given several website links to information on the common metabolic disease Diabetes mellitus, including information of different forms of this disease. Diabetes mellitus Type I is considered to be an autoimmune disorder, however Diabetes mellitus Type II is not and gestational diabetes manifests during pregnancy. This disease affects the ability of the body to utilize and/or produce insulin in response to increasing blood glucose levels. In this Unit, you learned how our tissues and organs work together to form organ systems and learned details of how the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, immune and reproductive systems function (and their structure). This disease can be directly linked functioning of the endocrine, circulatory, digestive, urinary and immune systems. Gestational diabetes that can be linked to female reproduction. Symptomatically it may lead to issues with other organ systems. Linked to this assignment is a Case Study on Diabetes mellitus for you to read. Using this information and the information from the introductory folder, write an essay discussing this disease and its effects on a person. You should include information on tissues and each of the systems relevant to this unit. An autoimmune disease is one where our immune system attacks our own tissues as though they were foreign and destroys them. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and as such is directly related to the endocrine system which was discussed in Unit 3 and should still be somewhat familiar to you. Things that you might discuss can include how the different forms of the disease develop, how the urinary system can be used to diagnose the disease and affects the disease has on the physiology (functioning) of the body and can manifest itself as circulatory, nervous and digestive problems. You might consider the long-term progression of the disease and symptoms. How is this disease managed and are there differences for the different forms. There are many things that you could consider but keep your discussion factual and relevant to the unit.
You must include a list of 2-3 resources that you used to gather information for this essay. The resources I provide are adequate but MUST be cited. References must be cited in the text (eg: Billings, 2023) if they are not common knowledge or are a quote or paraphrased comment. They should have the full reference in APA or MLA format in the resource list at the end. Web sites can be used but the author, date and title should be put in the reference list as well as just the link. Vet your references. Make sure that they are legitimate and have good information. Saying “Mayo clinic” or “Medline” is not a reference, it must be more specific. This essay should be between 700 and 1000 words to adequately discuss the topic.
As long as you address everything in this prompt, give references and write with correct grammar, your score will be high (90-100). If it is short, it will not address the prompt adequately. If you do not provide resources, the score cannot be higher than an 80. If you don’t proofread, I do deduct points. The due date for this assignment is specified. Work submitted by the deadline will be able to earn a 100%. Work submitted 30 minutes to 24 hours late will start with an 80. Work submitted 24 hours + 1 minute to 48 hours late will start with a 60. After that, I will NOT accept or grade submissions and they will be given a zero.
