Keys To Remember in Extemporaneous Speaking: This is the method of speech prepar

Keys To Remember in Extemporaneous Speaking:
This is the method of speech preparation where the speech is prepared and practiced, presented from notes (preferably on note cards) but NOT memorized or read word-for-word. It has a conversational style and sound to it.
“Extemporaneous speaking is the presentation of a carefully planned and rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes. By using notes rather than a full manuscript, the extemporaneous speaker can establish and maintain eye contact with the audience and assess how well they are understanding the speech as it progresses. The opportunity to assess is also an opportunity to restate more clearly any idea or concept that the audience seems to have trouble grasping.
Speaking extemporaneously has some advantages. It promotes the likelihood that you, the speaker, will be perceived as knowledgeable and credible. In addition, your audience is likely to pay better attention to the message because it is engaging both verbally and nonverbally. The disadvantage of extemporaneous speaking is that it requires a great deal of preparation for both the verbal and the nonverbal components of the speech. Adequate preparation cannot be achieved the day before you’re scheduled to speak.”
Prepare, prepare, prepare! You should be researching and preparing the final speech.
Remember, your Persuasive Speech counts the most grade-wise and contains all of the elements we have discussed all semester:
Organization skills, Presentation skills, Research, Visual Aids and Outlining.
Read the textbook chapters on Persuasion
PLEASE NO CONSPIRACY THEORIES.  They cannot be proven.  Focus on issues that are important to you that CAN be supported with verifiable research.
Also, here are some topics I want you to avoid as they are overdone and recycled semester after semester:  Vaccinations, Paying College Athletes, Distracted Driving, Politics, The Downfalls of Social Media, Any Conspiracy Theories, Vaping, Smoking, Adopt Don’t Shop, The Legalization of Marijuana, The Importance of Sleep, the Importance of Drinking Water, the Importance of Hand Washing.  Please do not use any of those topics.  Think of a topic that is important to you; that you are passionate about where you can find good, academic research to support your ideas.
Research Requirements for the Informative and the Persuasive Speeches:
Both the Informative and the Persuasive speeches require research. You are required to use four sources other than yourself  in each speech. After reading the chapters on research and supporting your ideas, begin your research. These are things that I require:
You must reference 3 documented sources in the Informative speech and 4 documented sources in the Persuasive speech. That means that you will actually refer to the source as you speak. There will be a penalty for not stating your sources within your speech (5 points per source).
Listing all of your sources all together at the beginning or end of the speech is a lazy way of citing and will not count as source citation.
A bibliography page or work cited page, listing your sources must accompany your outlines for both the Informative and Persuasive speeches.
Read the section on plagiarism in your text. Remember it is ok and required  for you to use material from sources, but you must give credit where credit is due.
Also remember that it is not only plagiarism to fail to cite sources.  It is also plagiarism to use other students’ work as your own.
