For this assignment, research a problem that is important to you. Then, write an essay in which you advocate for a solution or helpful approach to that problem.

The Research Stage
A research paper is a contribution to a discussion that is already taking place. When you do your research, you are listening to what others say (They Say) about the topic in order to thoughtfully enter that discussion yourself. Your research should go beyond the first few hits you get when you search the databases. Look for articles and other sources that are genuinely interesting to you and helpful for understanding your topic. You must use the SJCC library databases to find materials for your paper, but you may also find that other materials are helpful such as government websites, websites from various organizations, interviews with experts on your topic, and documentary films. However, your paper must include citations from at least three secondary sources found through the SJCC Library databases.
The Essay
Your paper will describe the problem in depth and help the reader understand why it is important and will argue for a specific solution to the problem. Your solution does not need to completely solve the problem. For example, offering better access to rehab options won’t eliminate drug addiction, but you could preset it as a way to help addicts recover.
In your essay, make sure to do the following, although not necessarily in this order:
Clearly identify and describe the problem using specific detail and concrete language
Cite at least five sources (at least three sources must be from the SJCC library databases and must be secondary sourcesLinks to an external site.)
Use They Say/I Say templates to introduce quotations and respond to the sources you include.
Demonstrate the implications of the problem and why it is important
Provide concrete details and examples based on your research
Propose a specific solution/approach to the problem
Have a clear and focused thesis that is supported throughout the essay
Provide an MLA style works cited page
