The rise and development of AI in all sectors of our lives is exponential and daunting. No area of human activity is unaffected by its impact.
Although strong arguments can be made on both sides about the use and abuse of technology, the role of AI within the Humanities raises questions that directly question our uniqueness in the ability to create “Art.”
The Humanities are the study of and implementation of Humans doing things for other Humans to show what it means “to be Human” and the Arts are often seen as the greatest expression of that.
However, within the span of a very short time, AI-generated Art has evolved to the level that it is extremely difficult to distinguish between Art made by humans and Art made by AI. Paintings, photographs, sculptures, music, architecture, poetry, literature, and design are all forms of Art that are currently being created by AI, and with astonishing results.
This evolution of AI raises questions of ethics and more importantly, what it means “to be Human.” Style and creativity are considered to be two undeniably and exclusively “human” qualities, but if an AI-generated work of art is indistinguishable from one made by a human being, what is the difference?
For this Common Assessment, you are asked to critically analyze this question and to effectively communicate a written response.
To do so, answer the following questions in paragraph form:
Do you think that AI-generated art is acceptable as “art”? Why, or why not?
What is the impact on Style and Creativity for Humans in this scenario?
Should there be guidelines on the use of AI when creating works of art? Or, is AI merely another tool or medium for humans to make art?
