Assignment Description:
Your assignment is to write a 1000 – 1250 word essay that argues a position using the classical or
Rogerian argument structure. The position that you are arguing is student-selected, but in order
to be successful, you should choose a position that is controversial and/or contestable. A
controversial position picks a side on a topic that is often debated in popular culture and politics.
If you choose a less common topic, then you should make sure that the position is contestable,
meaning that a reasonable person could be persuaded for or against that person.
Common argumentative essay types include the causal analysis essay, problem/solution,
definition argument, and text-to-world argument. I will cover all these essay types in class.
You must use at least four outside sources.
Audience:
Write in a manner that targets an audience of academic peers.
Format/Length:
1000 – 1250 words. Your document will be double-spaced, standard 12-point font, 1-inch
margins on all sides and will follow the APA format.
Grading criteria:
This essay will comprise 20% of your total grade.
Expectation:
The instructor will expect your essay to have:
1. A clear argumentative structure.
2. Effective style and usage.
3. Following directions found in the assignment page.
4. Adherence to the rubric standards
