Step 1: Getting Ready For your final design project, you will plan the redesign

May 1, 2024

Step 1: Getting Ready
For your final design project, you will plan the redesign of a room. You will have a fictitious budget of $5,000 for the project.
For all three activities, you will need to decide if you will use a physical or electronic journal. If you decide to use a physical journal, keep in mind that you will need to either scan or take photographs of the pages to submit for grading purposes.
Step 2: Getting to Know the Client and the Room
Your “client” for this project will be a young, married couple. They prefer light colors, clean lines, and enjoy the mid-century modern style. They would like you to redesign their TV room.
This client is only able to communicate via email, so all of your communication will be written. In order to gather the preliminary information, imagine you’ve sent the clients an email with some of the questions from Lesson 1: Where to Begin.
This is the email you receive in response:
Hello!
We are so excited to have you work on a remodel of our TV room. We use this room all the time to watch TV, work on puzzles, and entertain our friends. We need seating for at least five people, as we often invite other people over to watch movies on the weekends.
Our TV room is just off the kitchen, but it doesn’t lead anywhere else, so there isn’t any traffic coming through the room. We’ve got two big dogs that often sleep on the couch, so we need something durable and stain-resistant. Right now, the room has wall-to-wall carpeting that we don’t really like. So we would love it if you could come up with another floor covering option. We would really like the room to feel cozy and comfortable. And we must have plenty of throw pillows!
Please let us know if you have any other questions! We look forward to seeing your design!

Use your journal to write or type up a project summary including an introduction and a brief summary of the preliminary information that you gathered from the client’s email.
Step 3: Making the Floor Plan
Now you’re ready to break out your tape measure and record all the dimensions of the room that you will need to create a floor plan. Use the living room in your home or the home of another family member as a model for the space.
Refer to Lesson 2: Defining Space to help ensure you take all of the measurements that you will need. You should write all these measurements in your journal. Note any relevant room features, such as high ceilings, windows, or a fireplace, that may factor into your design.
Then, using graph paper, create a floor plan modeling the room to scale. Remember to make a note of the scale that you used (for example, 1 square = 1 foot).
Submit a copy of your journal entry from Step 2 and a photograph of your floor plan to the dropbox.
