ESL 051 Documented Argument Essay Assignment. You will write a five-paragraph argument essay on one of the following topics: State Abortion Laws
First step: Read articles on the topic that interests you. These articles MUST be taken from the NOVA
libraries databases. Hint: Use Issues and Controversies to begin your research.
Second step: Decide what the issue is, express it in a question (the articles themselves will help!), and
answer it to give you a working thesis statement. Create a Pro/Con chart to help guide you.
Third step: Select at least three (3) articles to use for your essay. One of these articles MUST come from
the Issues and Controversies database. When selecting your articles, be sure to consider their relevance
and timelines. Relevant articles directly address the topic. Timely articles are from recent publications.
No article dated prior to 2019 should be considered (without checking with the professor).
Fourth step: Write a draft of your essay. As you write, remember that the more care you take in your
early draft(s), the less time you will need to spend rewriting. Keep it simple and straightforward. Do not
try to offer too much support i.e., multiple examples per paragraph. You also must explain how your
examples support your position. You should, however, avoid offering too little support as well since too
little support weakens your argument.
Your essay must include:
An introductory paragraph in which you open with a lead/hook that is related to the topic and
that will interest the reader. Then clarify the issue and address BOTH sides of the issue.
A thesis statement that is clear and argumentative at the end of your introduction and that
reflects your position on the issue you have chosen. Note: thesis statements must be a single
sentence.
Two body paragraphs that begin with topic sentences that give specific reasons you take the
position in your thesis statement. Each body paragraph should include an explanation of the
reason in your topic sentence. Each paragraph should also include specific support
(examples/details drawn from the articles or other specific information) that illustrates the point
you make. Remember to explain how the specific information is related to the topic sentence.
Paragraphs should end with appropriate concluding sentences.
A refutation/counterargument paragraph in which you present a specific argument from the
opposition (not a “counter thesis” presenting the opposite position). It is to be one point used
by the opposition in support of its position. This must be followed by a third, distinct reason
for your position, developed in the same way as the arguments in body paragraphs one and two
and ending with a concluding sentence.
A concluding paragraph in which you revisit the issue and present your thesis and supporting
points in a fresh manner. This paragraph should also leave the reader with something interesting
to think about. This is not the place to include new information that could have been used to
make your point in the body. Rather, this should be a prediction, recommendation, call to
action, or hypothetical/rhetorical question related to the topic of the essay.
Appropriate in-text citations and a works cited page in proper MLA format. USE SIMPLE WORDS TO WRITE THIS ESSAY. DON’T MAKE IT LOOK TOO PROFESSIONAL!!!
