Students will be learning about various mental health disorders that affect children and adolescents throughout the semester. The case report will require you to read a brief case vignette describing a child’s history and presenting symptoms. From this information, you will be asked to several things.
Section 1. Provide a provisional diagnosis using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) explaining why the diagnosis fits given the information provided in the vignette. You will be asked to provide at least one differential diagnosis (i.e., a different plausible diagnosis that you considered).
Section 2. Using theories and research evidence discussed in the course, provide a brief conceptualization describing the factors that likely contribute to and maintain the presenting symptoms. This section should consider the role of biological, social, cultural, and psychological factors in the child’s presentation.
Section 3. Describe potential evidence-based intervention options that could be used to help the child from the vignette. Explain why the intervention(s) might be appropriate. What would the goals of the intervention be? How would it address the child’s symptoms or factors contributing to those symptoms described in Section 2? Describe at least two specific strategies that might be used in the intervention. Finally, describe potential challenges that you anticipate might come up during treatment.
