QUESTION (a)    660 -800 words, 81 points.
In the past decade, how does the spread of election disinformation and hateful and inciting speech through different (name them) media and social media (weeks 12, 13 and 14 reading) compare and contrast to the activities of Cambridge Analytica in week 11 reading?   Show how current election disinformation through microtargeting, harvesting personal data, algorithms to rank recommended news and posts to maximize anger, engagement, and platform use, is based in, and yet goes beyond, activities pioneered by Cambridge Analytica.
QUESTION (b)  660 -800 words. 81 points.  Answer all parts of the question.
In Facebook/ Meta, judging from the internal documents discussed in the required readings, what patterns have emerged from the different positions of Mark Zuckerberg, and those of Facebook’s integrity staff?    How is executive power in decision-making processes in week 11 and 13 related to the current backsliding (week 14) of policies on content moderation, suspension of users, transparency, staff layoffs, etc.?  Be sure to differentiate between policies at various platforms like X, Meta/Facebook/Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.
Number the pages of your paper.  Please cite using exact page numbers like this (Wylie 2019, p. 100), thus highlighting in yellow the authors you cite.   Simplified American Psychological Association (APA) style is strongly preferred, simplified to (author year, page number) cited in the text.  No bibliography.  You must cite page numbers you actually read and used.
In your answer, do not express your own opinion.  Focus instead on the views of the authors featured in the required readings.  For this assignment do not conduct additional research on the internet.  Your course required readings will be the only sources for this paper.  In this course do not use AI programs to generate a draft of an answer that you submit as your own work.
Use your own words to paraphrase and summarize the course readings. Do not quote an entire sentence.  Restrict your direct quotes to six words only from an author.
You must use page numbers for all sources.  Accurate citation, and the resulting transparency of sources, enables everyone to judge what is truthful.  Thus, a crucial part of this assignment is proper citation, and failure to do so is the mark of a failing paper.  Improper citation includes citing page numbers that do not contain the information you use in your writing, and adding references and page numbers to an AI generated text that does not have them.
AI POLICY
In this course do NOT use AI apps such as ChatGPT or Bard to generate a draft of a part of an answer that you submit as your own work.  Such apps will not utilize specific information from the specialized required readings in this course.  Your answers must show familiarity with all of the required readings. An AI generated text will not do this, and will instead generate general, unsupported conclusions that are not focused on following the instructions and issues on the assignment sheet.  Or AI will generate a list of statements, some of which are false “hallucinations,” that that are not focused on a theme and are not ordered and organized for presentation to an audience of educated readers.  Turning in such a low quality of work, in and of itself, no matter how it was constructed and revised, will result in your being given a failing grade.
Scoring Rubric.  Up to 100 points can be earned, 50 points for each question.
Zero to 70%.  An answer contains too many generalities and judgements. Facts that are presented are not ordered and organized for presenation to an audience of educated readers.
Grades in the B range.  Questions are answered factually, with details and examples.  Logical presentation.   All required readings are used and cited, but not necessarily directly quoted with quotation marks.  Your paper will thereby earn a score in the B range, with the actual number depending upon how well the details and examples you cite are integrated into main points that address questions (a) and (b) specifically and directly.
Grades in the A range.  Questions are answered factually, with many supporting details and examples. Logical presentation.  All required readings are used and cited, but not necessarily directly quoted with quotation marks.  Additional recommended readings are cited (but not necessarily directly quoted with quotation marks).  Your paper shows evaluation, analysis, synthesis, and other critical thinking skills.  Points to larger significance and context of details.  Your paper will thereby earn a score in the A range, with the actual number depending upon how well the many details and examples you cite are synthesized into main points, reflecting concepts in the reading, that directly and cogently answer questions (a) and (b). Some of you have been doing this for past papers and are getting impressively good at it!
