Final Paper: Your final paper should be a 10-page research paper. It is recommended that you work from one or two primary texts in the class; additional research is required for this assignment. For the final paper, you should have at least four secondary sources. The goal of this assignment is to focus on an idea and clearly state it.
My Thesis for this paper: The Iliad not only objectifies women through characters such as Helen and Briseis but also reflects and perpetuates the patriarchal values of men in ancient Greek society, thereby influencing perceptions of gender roles and female agency.
This is an opportunity to go in-depth on one or two of the works we have examined in class and the breadth of opportunities is wide. Focus on what matters to you. That said, the final paper should address an aspect of gender or sexuality in the ancient world.
Requirements:
Cite your primary source(s) and secondary sources in your bibliography.
Have a clear thesis statement.
Include at least four articles or chapters from peer-reviewed academic sources. Encyclopedia entries, for example, are tertiary sources. If in doubt whether a source is a peer-reviewed academic source, do not hesitate to ask.
Review your paper to make sure it is free from grammatical and syntactical errors.
No cover page is needed, but do include at least your name, the class, and a title of your paper.
Formatting:
· Your proposals should be written in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Your proposals should be double-spaced and should be 2 pp. (pages).
· For longer quotes, it is better to indent the longer passages slightly and single-space that text.
· For the works cited, the entries should be left-aligned. It is not necessary to provide bullet points for the works cited. For entries that run over a line, it is best to indent the following lines for that same entry. Works cited pages tend to be single spaced and should be alphabetized by the authors’ last names.
· When citing sources, please use the APA style of citation.
o I prefer the author-date format for citations.
· Ancient sources can be difficult to navigate since we are using both primary sources (i.e. excerpts of ancient texts, such as the Iliad, Batrachomyomachia, selections of Quintus of Smyrna’s Posthomerica, κτλ.) and also secondary sources (e.g. articles).
o When citing Powell’s words, it is best to format your citations in-line like so:
§ (Powell page-number). E.g. (Powell 129).
o For ancient sources and excerpts provided in your textbook, there are a few more steps. The Oxford Classical Dictionary, 4th ed. provides a list of abbreviations for ancient authors and their works.
o This list of abbreviations can be found at the following link: https://oxfordre.com/classics/page/3993
§ When citing authors, it is ideal to write the abbreviate the name of the author, the work (usually in Italics), the book number when applicable, and the line or section number
· E.g. “A quote from Homer’s Iliad” (Hom. Il. 1.20-25). or “More quotes from the Homeric Hymn to Demeter”(Hom. Hymn Dem. 12-25).
Please use only all the 8 sources that I attached here! And dont forget to include phrases or quotes from the article or book into the paper also the in-text citation as well.
