A fundamental outcome of this Capstone course is examining ethical dilemmas and proposing solutions. We face ethical dilemmas in our global society daily, and you will be thinking through some ethical perspectives as a part of your research project this term. By this stage in your degree, you should be well-versed in basic ethical principles, since you were required to complete at least 3 credits in ethics as part of your degree. These ethical principles also guide us in our everyday lives, and codes of conduct are absolutely essential to our current and future professions.
Ethical standards guide us in academia more broadly, as well. So, in this discussion, you will use your ethical reasoning skills to confront a problem we all see in the classroom: academic dishonesty. Statistically, we know at least a few students who complete this capstone course each year will plagiarize, “borrow” work from a friend, or even engage in contract cheating. Why?

Initial Post Part 1: Choose a Scenario (Due Wednesday)
Choose one scenario below to address in the first half of your initial post.
You are in this Capstone class with Jane, who is nervous about the rigor of this course, especially the research and writing components. Jane has a cousin who took this course last year. Jane “borrows” her cousin’s final research project and uses it to shortcut her own research process: she borrows sources, ideas, and some of the wording from her cousin and submits it as her own. Jane mentions this to you while you are working together on the team project. Jane seems like a really nice person who is a bit overwhelmed by work and family issues and is just struggling to finish her degree. This is her last course at the university and then she can graduate. So why should you care? How does her decision to cheat make you feel, as a student who has completed their work honestly? How does Jane’s action impact your course experience and the value of your own bachelor’s degree?
You are a faculty member at Excelsior who serves on the Academic Integrity Council. This group hosts appeal hearings for students who are facing dismissal from the university over academic integrity violations. Today you are hearing the case of Kevin, who was caught cheating in this LA498 capstone course. Kevin was accused of finding another student’s research paper on a notorious “tutoring” website, making some changes to the wording, and then submitting it as his own. Kevin comes to the hearing acknowledging that he made a mistake, but argues that he did it out of desperation. He was struggling with the course and dealing with a lot of competing demands on his time, like unexpected overtime at work and caring for a sick family member. He also argues that he “Googled” his topic and this “tutoring” website came up, so he didn’t know it was not an appropriate site to use. What questions would you ask Kevin? How would you counsel him? What penalty do you think he ought to receive?
Initial Post Part 2: Choose a Question (Due Wednesday)
For the second half of your initial post, review the required readings and video listed above and choose one of the questions below to address thoroughly:
What tactics can (or should) colleges take to decrease plagiarism and cheating?
What do academic experts say about human behavior and cheating—when and why do people cheat in society in general? How can that help us understand when students are likely to engage in academic dishonesty?
How might cultural differences affect perceptions of academic integrity? What strategies might help to reduce unethical conduct in the classroom while respecting the norms and values of diverse populations?
Some research suggests that academic dishonesty may be a predictor of unethical behavior in the workplace. Why? Do you agree?
Your initial post should address one prompt from Part 1 and Part 2 above and be at least 250 words. It should include evidence from at least two scholarly outside sources and references in APA format. Use the Excelsior LibraryLinks to an external site. to find sources to support your arguments.
