I am writing to express my sincere interest in pursuing dental education at ____ University School of Dental Medicine and hope you will reconsider my application for an interview.
I understand that _____ receives many applications from highly qualified candidates, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be considered among them. I feel confident that my background, experiences, and genuine passion for dentistry make me a strong candidate for the program.
I decided to pursue dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having limited resources, working at our family business to support them financially, and encountering peers who seemed to be significantly ahead left me feeling apprehensive about my competitiveness within the field.
However, I realized perseverance is one of my strong aspects. After sending numerous emails to nearby local dental offices asking if I could work despite the pandemic, I was able to work at a pediatric dental office once a week. I took classes for pre-dental students at UCLA and shadowed dentists through Zoom. I continued to volunteer at local events.
Working at my family’s business also gave me a unique experience. Being the eldest child and proficient in English, I had to be the “manager” at the age of 19. During these 5 years, I learned how to handle conflicts from customers, ensure smooth operations and organize daily tasks. Although working in a restaurant seems unrelated to the dental field, I believe the skills that I learned are transferable.
While I am aware that my GPA and DAT scores may not be as competitive as those of other applicants, I found out that a small percentage of accepted candidates from last year share similar statistics to mine. With my passion for dentistry, I aspire to be among that 5% this year. I sincerely hope for the opportunity to interview, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of who I am as an applicant and, more importantly, as a person.
