Answer the following four (4) questions:
1. What is the contrast you see between Hinduism and the hedonistic approach to happiness?
2. Explain the difference between the virtue of ‘human-heartedness’ in Confucianism and ‘the heart’ in Sufism.
3. Define the concept of ‘transcendence’ as it appears in both Sufism and Taoism. Contrast the way these two traditions use the concept of transcendence by explaining its relevance to the conceptualization of happiness.
4. Drawing on the eastern approaches to happiness and well-being that we’ve studied this week, discuss an element of happiness that you had not previously considered. Explain how you think you could apply this element to your own ideas about happiness and well-being.

You must quote the assigned text for this week at least once per question. Make sure to cite where the quote appears in the assigned text by using an in-text parenthetical. Do not let the quote ‘speak for itself.’ Rather, explain exactly how it applies to the question and why it is relevant.
Each of your responses should be 150-200 words in length. (So, 600-800 total words.) Include a word-count at the end of each response.

This is what I will be looking for in grading your reflections:
a. Does the assignment demonstrate sufficient comprehension of the relevant key issue(s) from the assigned reading for the week? Or, does the assignment reveal a misreading or misunderstanding of a key element in the assigned reading for the week?
b. Does the assignment demonstrate sufficient effort, thoughtfulness, and (when warranted) creativity? Does the assignment follow the instructions?
**Your assignment should use the ideas, arguments, and claims presented in the assigned readings for this week. As explained in the syllabus, and as a reminder, you are not permitted to use or reference any written or visual materials in your assignments that are not explicitly assigned in the course without written permission from your instructor.
The total viewing time for this week’s videos is approximately 90 minutes. A little long, I know. That said, they are delightful and highly informative.
