Annotated Bibliography for Junior Capstone Project

Group’s Essential Question to Drive Research (Write Down): Who can benefit from thrift stores?
Individual Focus Area:
Which American groups are most affected by the social issue?
Task: Using your group’s essential question, you will individually conduct research on your specific focus area. For instance, if your group is exploring “What causes/leads to homelessness in Denver?” and you are responsible for focusing on the “current state,” you will want to find two articles that focus on the current state of homelessness in Denver. After finding two scholarly articles, you will need to write an annotated bibliography, consisting of six paragraphs, three paragraphs annotating your first source and three paragraphs annotating your second source.
Requirements:
You must include two scholarly sources from online databases.
Each source must be cited in MLA Format on your document.
Each source needs to have the four required elements of Annotated Bibliographies (see below).
Be sure your Annotated Bibliography is set up in the correct MLA Format (see example).
Elements of Annotated Bibliography: +
1. Citations:
A Page from a Website:
“Athlete’s Foot – Topic Overview.” WebMD, 25 Sept. 2014,
www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/tc/athletes-foot-topic-overview. Accessed 3 April 2024.
An Article from an Online Scholarly Journal:
Dolby, Nadine. “Research in Youth Culture and Policy: Current Conditions and Future
Directions.” Social Work and Society: The International Online-Only Journal, vol.
6, no. 2, 2008, www.socwork.net/sws/article/view/60/362. Accessed 20 May 2009.
***ALWAYS double-check your citation with PurdueOwl when using a Citation Generator***
2. Summary:
Name the “Title of the Article,” author, publisher, and date it was written. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is. Every sentence should use attributive tags to help your reader understand that this is what the AUTHOR’S ideas are on this topic- not yours.
3. Assessment:
After summarizing a source, it is helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? Be specific. How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
***This is where you use the CRAAP test to evaluate the source.***
4. Reflection:
Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Why was this author credible? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic? For this paragraph, you must include at least two pieces of direct evidence that help support your group’s answer to the essential question. Make sure to include page numbers in the form of in-text citations. ***This is the most important part of your annotated bibliography.***
