In three double-spaced, typewritten pages, respond to the following: Edgar Allan Poe argued that a literary text, like a poem or short story, should have a “unity of effect.” That is, a text should try to achieve a dominant mood, which in turn has a dominant effect on the reader, and all of the formal elements of the text should be designed to help achieve that effect. In this assignment, you will be asked to analyze one of the poems we have read and discussed this semester using Poe’s theory as a critical lens. What, in your interpretation, is the dominant effect of your selected poem on the reader? And what formal elements of the poem (i.e., imagery, rhyme, lineation, figures of speech, etc.) are being employed by the author to create said effect?
