This paper must be 20-25 pages in length, double-spaced, and show original scholarship in both primary and secondary material, demonstrating proficiency in historical research and historical concepts. It has to use 20 secondary sources and 5 primary sources, I attached a file with some sources that can be used but if those aren’t efficient enough please replace them with what is necessary.
I also attached a template as to how the paper could be set up, it doesn’t have to be completely the same but please hit each topic within the paper. Also, I added my proposal, it’s a little rough but it can give an idea as to what the paper should be about.
Proposal: By examining the intersecting dynamics of race and gender, this thesis will argue that Black women played perpetual roles during both women’s suffrage and the fight for civil rights while facing demeaning obstacles. Through examining the roles, challenges, and contributions of Black women, this research hopes to shed light on the often overlooked voices and perspectives. The objectives of this research are to understand the tensions between Black suffragists and white suffragists, Black male civil activists, and Black female civil activists, and to assess the impact of Black women’s activism. The project will use a combination of primary and secondary sources to identify the experiences of Black women during the women’s suffrage and civil rights movement. Primary sources will include speeches, writing, and personal narratives of Black women activists. Secondary sources will utilize scholarly works, historical analyses, and frameworks related to intersectionality and social movements. These sources will be used in hopes of exploring the challenges they faced in predominately white and male-dominated movements and how they navigated. Some primary sources expected to be used are speeches and writing from Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Mary Terrel, and other prominent Black suffragists and civil rights activists. Records and publications of leading, especially women, organizations, and autobiographies of Black women activists. Some secondary sources are “When and Where I Enter: The Impact of Black Women on Race and Sex in America” by Paula Giddings, “The Myth of Seneca Falls: Memory and the Women’s Suffrage Movement, 1848-1898” by Lisa Tetrault, and “Freedom’s Daughters: The Unsung Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement from 1830 to 1970” by Lynne Olson. The methodology will involve a combination of archival research and historical textual analysis. Archival sources will be used to explore primary documents that offer insight into lived experiences and the activism of Black women. Historical textual analysis will involve closely reading speeches, writings, and organizational records. Scholarly works will be used to look into already existing frameworks on women’s suffrage, civil rights, and intersectionality. The question that is proposed and will be answered throughout this project is, how did the intersectionality of race and gender shape the experiences and activism of Black women within the women’s suffrage and civil rights movement in the United States? The timeline of this research paper will span from the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s. It will touch on key moments for black women and depict their triumphs and challenges.
