Use the books slaughter house-five by kurt vonnegut and animal farm by george orwell
Following World War II, George Orwell wanted to write a novel about the rise of authoritarianism, particularly in the Soviet Union. But instead of writing about Russia, he decided to write a short allegorical novel about a bunch of farm animals overthrowing their farmer and trying to establish a more equal society. After this novel, Orwell wrote his greatest work, 1984, also about the rise of totalitarianism, but this time he decided to use science fiction as his mode.
Similarly, following his experiences in the War, Kurt Vonnegut decided that he wanted to write a book about his experience during the firebombing of Dresden. Like Orwell, he decided that directly writing about the experience would fail his purpose, so instead, he wrote a postmodern novel featuring time travel and aliens.
In both of these cases, the author decided that writing directly about a topic was not the best way to achieve their purposes. In five paragraphs, write an essay about one or both of the novels exploring whether the author’s choice to write about their topic indirectly was an effective means to communicate their central ideas.
Grading
This essay will be graded out of 10.
Since this is a process essay, points will be sharply deducted for grammar and spelling, as well as formatting issues. Misspelled names will lead to an immediate deduction of points.
We are going to do a peer review the day before the essay is due; students who fail to bring a complete draft to that class will only receive ½ credit on their final essay.
The student will select three of the seven skills to be graded on. These are entirely the student’s choice. I will choose the skills Coherence voice and into/conclusion
