The difficult thing about diversity and inclusion is that it paints people with a broad brush. Many of you may never have – and never will – treat others with any distinction other than what their skillset or personality brings. Some of you are being told you must hire certain individuals to make the organization appear more diverse. Some of you may know or work with people who are overtly biased or prejudiced. These are difficult topics. The intent is not to make you uncomfortable but to think a bit outside your own worldview – and better yet, try to think from someone’s elses.
Remember: all opinions are valued. We need diversity of thought here.
Topic:
Your supervisor has just announced s/he will be making some diversity hires. You secretly wonder if that’s the best way to assess candidates:
Shouldn’t their [gender/religion/race…] not be a consideration?
What if the truly best candidate does not fall into a particular diversity category?
You want to have this dialogue with your supervisor.
What will you say?
