Think about the messages children receive from their environment (such as from parents, mass media, the Internet, Hollywood movies, billboards, and storybooks). In what ways do these messages influence the kinds of emotions that children should and should not feel? It might help to think about it this way, what did your family teach you about yourself? What did the outside environment teach you about yourself? How did these message shape your feelings toward yourself (or toward others)? (You don’t have to answer personally, you can answer about kids in general– whatever you are comfortable with!)

Children receive messages from various sources in their environment, and these messages can significantly influence the kinds of emotions they believe are acceptable to feel and express. Firstly, parents play a crucial role in shaping children’s emotional experiences. The way parents respond to their children’s emotions, whether with empathy and validation or dismissal and punishment, teaches children about the acceptability of their feelings. For example, if a child is consistently told to “toughen up” or “stop crying,” they may learn to suppress their emotions or believe that certain emotions are weak or shameful. On the other hand, if parents encourage emotional expression and support during difficult times, children are more likely to develop healthy emotional regulation skills. Mass media, including television shows, movies, and social media, also significantly shape children’s emotional landscapes. These mediums often portray unrealistic standards of happiness, beauty, and success, which can lead children to feel inadequate or disappointed with their own lives. For instance, if a child constantly sees images of perfect bodies or luxurious lifestyles, they may develop feelings of insecurity or jealousy.
Furthermore, societal norms and cultural expectations communicated through various channels like advertisements, storybooks, and even peer interactions can influence children’s emotional experiences. Messages about gender roles, race, and socioeconomic status can all impact how children perceive themselves and others, leading to feelings of superiority, inferiority, or exclusion.
Overall, the messages children receive from their environment significantly influence the kinds of emotions they believe are acceptable and appropriate to feel. It is essential for caregivers and society as a whole to promote messages that validate a wide range of emotions and encourage healthy emotional expression and coping strategies.

The messages expressed within families and the media can influence children’s emotions based on morals/values and societal standards which impacts their perception of themselves and of others. Parents often teach their children based on their beliefs and moral values. Some may tell their kids to follow a “you only live once” attitude which would result in greater feelings of autonomy and increased vulnerability to the “fear of missing out.” On the other hand, others will teach their children to have pride in their culture/family, hard work, and to avoid unnecessary risks which could either cause them to feel a greater family connection and a need for safety or an increased distance in these relationships plus a desire to control one’s actions. The former appears to be the intended response while the latter is the most likely outcome of instilling these beliefs in most humble families.
In terms of the media, the influence seems to fall under the societal standards within that culture. In western culture, the media will often express ideas relating to trends and fashion, especially those in the best interest of corporations. Such ideas will often impact how children perceive these things in regard to their view of themselves. They are likely to feel a need to be accepted by others based on what is popular, which could lead to them expressing more negative emotions concerning themselves as well as a desire to engage in these things so they could experience greater social acceptance.
