Media ethics prompt

Please answer all the questions.

Case 1: Please watch this video of a journalist interviewing a hurricane survivor, then answer the questions below:

  • Briefly explain the ethical problems with this interview.
  • If you were the journalist, how would you have handled the situation?

Case 2: The picture below won the World Press Photo of the Year in 2017 and shows the assassination of Andrei Karlov, the Russian Ambassador to Turkey. The picture shows the assassin holding a gun and pointing his index finger in the air. He appears to be shouting. At his feet, we see the body of the Russian ambassador. His face is not visible, and we do not see blood or other evidence of violence.
Explaining the decision to give the photographer, BurhanOzbilici, the award, the jury chair Stuart Franklin, said: “I think it is an incredibly hard-hitting news photograph, great spot news story. It wasn’t just a photograph; it was a spot news story and I think that Burhan was incredibly courageous and had extraordinary composure in being able to sort of calm himself down in the middle of the affray and take the commanding pictures that he took.” (Spot news is breaking news. It’s news that occurs on the spur of the moment and must be reported immediately).

Keeping this in mind, please answer the questions below:

  • Do you see any ethical issues with this photograph? Please explain.
  • To what extent do you agree/disagree with Franklin’s statement about the photograph?
