and the ‘Women’s Press’ in Turn-of-the-20th-Century Egypt.” International
Journal of Middle East Studies 33, no. 2 (2001): 171–201. http://www.jstor.org/stable/259561.
Skilled in Arabic literature and Middle Eastern studies,
Marilyn Booth published a paper titled “Woman in Islam: Men and the
‘Women’s Press’ in Turn-of-the-20th-Century Egypt.” She researched the
increase in importance of women’s newspapers in Egypt during 1900. According to
Booth, these journals helped Egyptian women an attempt for their rights by
giving them a voice in communities where men often held higher positions. She
supported up her points with stories from history, newspaper articles, and
studies. Booth explained how these publications discussed matters affecting
women as well as supporting and opposing the view that males belong in
positions of power. Her study sheds light on the interactions between men and
women as well as how gender stereotypes were formed in Egypt’s culture.
·       Agmon, Iris. “Women, Class, and
Gender: Muslim Jaffa and Haifa at the Turn of the 20th Century.” International
Journal of Middle East Studies 30, no. 4 (1998): 477–500. http://www.jstor.org/stable/164337.
Iris Agmon, a Middle East researcher, wrote a paper titled
“Women, Class, and Gender: Muslim Jaffa and Haifa at the Turn of the 20th
Century.” Her research focused on the late 1800s and early 1900s
lifestyles of Muslim women in Jaffa and Haifa. Agmon claims that societal views
on gender roles and economic standing at the time had an effect on women’s life
in these areas. Her study offers a comprehensive examination of the
opportunities and difficulties that Muslim women in these regions faced during
that particular historical period. Agmon used research from others as well as
archive materials to support her views.
Mahmood, Saba. Politics
of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject. Princeton:
Princeton University Press, 2005.
The title of one of Saba Mahmood’s works is “Politics
of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject.” She looks at how
Egyptian women at the center of the Islamic revival movement take on leadership
positions in the fields of religion and politics. Mahmood says that these women
purposely shape their identities in ways that violate stereotypes of feminists
in the West. She offers in-depth understanding of the relationship between
gender, religion, and activism in modern Muslim society, based on her studies
in Cairo. Mahmood’s writings are captivating and creative, providing us with a
new viewpoint on Islam and feminism.

Moghadam, Valentine M.,
ed. Gender and National Identity:
Women and Politics in Muslim Societies. London: Zed Books, 1994.
The title of one book edited by Valentine M. Moghadam is
“Gender and National Identity: Women and Politics in Muslim
Societies.” It looks at how politics, gender, and nationalism interact in
Muslim societies. The book includes contributions from a wide range of experts
who have studied how women participate into social, political, and cultural
life during the 20th century. Using both recent and historical data, they show
how women have shaped national identities and taken part in political movements
in countries where Muslims make up the majority of the population. Thanks to
Moghadam’s study, we now have a clearer knowledge of how women have been
involved in politics in Muslim countries throughout the past century.

Hoodfar, Homa. Between Marriage and the Market: Intimate
Politics and Survival in Cairo. Berkeley: University of California
Press, 1997.
Homa Hoodfar is the author of
several books, including “Between Marriage and the Market: Intimate
Politics and Survival in Cairo.” It covers the life of women in Cairo in
the late 1900s. Hoodfar looks into how city women manage their kids and money.
She studied this by interviewing people and conducting research on their lives.
The book aids in our understanding of the challenges faced by women and the
strategies they use to prosper in a city undergoing change. Hoodfar’s research
clarifies the ways in which gender roles and Egyptian culture are changing.
