IMPORTANT: This second essay should focus on materials we have read in class from The Norton Anthology. Essays that do not focus on class materials will be graded an AUTOMATIC ZERO in Categories A,B,C of the grading rubric. Please choose ONLY ONE of the following prompts.
Prompt:
Investigate something that you posted about in one of your Discussion assignments. The texts that can be used for this prompt:
Dante, The Inferno
Give a focused analysis of the final circle of Hell and Compound Treachery. Things to consider: What sins/sinners are here? How is Satan described and how is this final level the culmination of synthesizing Christian and Classical cultures?

This essay requires a synthesis of:
the course readings (mixture of direct quotes and paraphrase)
use of at least one outside source–use the Library Guide for help
at least one of the course lecture videos.
Submissions without this synthesis of all of these requirements will receive an automatic 6 pt. deduction in the Argument Development and Evidence Material rubric categories.
Avoid casting too wide of a net, avoid long chronology papers, and avoid papers that summarize texts w/o creating an argument about them. Remember, that though this is a 5-page minimum, getting to 5 pages doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve thoroughly formed and supported your argument.
The submitted essay needs to maintain an academic voice of respect, openness, and responsible source support, and maintain a safe academic space for all students.

All quoted and paraphrased materials must be properly cited according to MLA guidelines.
Required length: 5 full pages of text + Works Cited Page. Anything short of 5 pages will receive an automatic deduction in the Style category of the rubric (see grading rubric).
These papers will be graded according to their thoughtfulness, persuasiveness, precision, textual support, clarity, attention to assignment requirements and the HSSC Writing Rubric.
