The reflection paper should address some of the following questions:
1. Discuss the difficulties/challenges that people released from prison must overcome. Please refer to specific individuals in the documentary when making your points.
2. What characteristic/factor do you think is most important for a person released from prison to have to lead a law-abiding life? Explain.
3. How do you define “success” for a person returning to the community from prison? Should recidivism reduction be the major outcome of concern for prisoner reentry? Explain why or why not.
4. Discuss Glaser’s typology of role orientations for parole officers with an emphasis on control and/or assistance. Explain why you think a parole officer in the documentary fits a specific role orientation (e.g., parental, punitive, welfare, etc.)
5. Parolees returned to prison for “technical violations” or “crimeless revocations” is a major correctional concern today. Discuss the policies and interventions shown in the documentary that Connecticut has implemented to reduce technical violations and revocations.
6. Discuss the role of halfway houses in prisoner reentry. Do you support this intervention? Explain why or why not.
7. What person, story, situation, or statistic was the most memorable (significant, meaningful, surprising, disturbing) for you? Explain why.
