Using one or more of the art historical methodologies we’ve examined this semester, write an art historical research paper on a focused topic of your choosing (in consultation with the professor).
At least 7 pages of written text (it can, and probably should, be longer) Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, 1-inch margins, Chicago Style, images, and bibliography
Your paper must include:
A discussion of the state of the literature on your topic and its relation to art and artistic practice (you will need to conduct research, including at least 5-10 sources beyond the texts we’ve read in class). (I ATTACHED SCREENSHOTS OF TEXTS READ IN CLASS)
A detailed discussion of at least 2 works of art in relation to your topic situating all works in their social, historical, aesthetic and political contexts.
Given the length constraints of this research paper, the more narrow your focus, the more in-depth your analysis of each artwork/text can be!
Grading: Your paper will be graded on the following: a) the degree to which your paper demonstrates knowledge of, and critical engagement with one or more of the methodologies examined in the course (facilitated by class discussion and outside research) b) detailed visual descriptions of the artworks you include c) the strength of your analysis of the artworks included in relation to your chosen topic/thesis d) the clarity with which the ideas are presented e) grammar and organization.
