The essay I’d about writing a literary analysis of “A private experience” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Revision’s intrusions
Go back and re-read the assignment before you begin working on the revision.
You may not simply “fix” the things that I pointed to on your first essay. You must take everything into consideration and do your best to make this a better paper. Read chapter 11 from They Say I Say for pointers. (If your revision is too close to the original, I will simply give it the same grade you earned on the original, and your revision work will have been in vain; it is possible to make a lower grade on the revision, so get help if you need it. If the “revision” is the exact same as the original, you will earn a grade of zero, and the revision grade replaces the original)
Your revision must address organization, grammar, punctuation, and content.
Check your sources. Make sure that you have included support for something that you have argued with a peer reviewed journal article. If you need to change your sources, do so. Do not change your topic.
Keep a copy of the revision so that you can complete the Self-Evaluation assignment. The Self-Evaluation assignment is a part of the major writing grade for this class, so take it seriously, and be as thorough as possible with it.
Assignment requirements
Format Requirements
Follow MLA guidelines for formatting and documentation
1” margins on top, bottom, left, and right
Last name and page number aligned with the right margin in the header beginning on the first page of the essay, ½ from the top edge of the paper
Times New Roman 12 font
Double spacing throughout (there should not be any additional space between paragraphs or before/after the title)
No cover page
Heading must contain all required information in the correct order and formatted accurately (recall the military format for the date with an abbreviated month)
Paragraphs must be indented ½ inch
Works cited page must be on a separate page with contiguous page numbers and the student’s last name aligned with the right margin in the header just as in the rest of the paper (use the page break function to add the works cited page to the end of your paper; it must not be a separate document)
Works cited page uses hanging indentation and is evenly double spaced
Documentation Requirements
Documentation must be in MLA style
Parenthetical citations must include author’s last name and page number without a comma between them
All in-text citations must refer to a source listed on the works cited page (you are required to have a minimum of two sources)
All sources on the works cited page must be used in the essay
Direct quotes must be in quotation marks (you may not use “long” or “block”—four typed lines of text or longer—quotes in this essay)
Summaries and paraphrases must not be in quotation marks, but they must include signal phrases as well as page numbers in parentheses at the end of sentences (alternatively, students may include information that has been summarized or paraphrased and include the author’s last name and the page number in the parenthesis at the end of the sentence)
Please note that intentional plagiarism will be rewarded with an F in the course, and unintentional plagiarism will earn a zero on the essay (In either case, I will file an Academic Honesty Violation report with the college–If you need help to avoid plagiarism, go to the tutoring center or make an appointment to meet with me in my office).
Length Requirement
The completed essay must be 4 – 6 pages in length. This means that at a minimum, the essay must reach all the way to the bottom of page 4, and it may not go more than a half page past the bottom of page 6. This does not include the works cited page and there should not be a cover page. Please note: if you are writing a comparison/contrast essay, the minimum page length is five full pages. Any paper that does not meet the minimum length requirement will lose 10 points from the final grade for the paper.
Write for Intended Audience
Consider that your audience is made up of college educated adults who are familiar with the authors whom we’ve read but may not have read the particular story or stories you are analyzing. Don’t assume that your audience is American; you should be writing for a global audience.
Required Sources
You must of course use the short story itself, but you must also include at least one peer reviewed academic journal article. You may also use a popular source if you so desire, but that is not a requirement. You may not use Wikipedia, Goodreads, SparkNotes, CliffsNotes, or any other such resource that is intended to assist students with understanding a piece of literature. Additionally, blogs are generally not acceptable sources for college level writing. If you want to cite a blog as your popular source, check with me. You may not cite another student’s paper or Internet project.
