Refined Research Question: Are older adult patients who are 65 and older, currently residing in a nursing home and have at least one pressure ulcer, less likely to be diagnosed with a life-threatening infection if they receive consistent pressure ulcer prevention and care by nursing home staff, when compared to adult patients 65 and older who do not receive a consistent pressure ulcer prevention and care bundle?
Identify the population you want to know about and the sample/sample scheme you will use to reach them.
Population, defined as all the people or things that fit the description of who would be of interest to your study, based upon the aim/purpose and research question (Marshall, 2020). The population in my study includes adult patients who are 65 years or older, that reside in a nursing home and have at least one pressure ulcer. The sample scheme that I will use to reach this population in my research is through convenience sampling. Convenience sampling is when a group of subjects is utilized because they are accessible to the researcher, or convenient (Marshall, 2020). In my research project, researchers will not be going out of their way to hunt down participants in the research study. We will simply utilize individuals that reside in the chosen nursing home that fit this criteria.
Identify the kind of data you think you will need to answer your research question and how you will go about getting it.
The kind of data that I think I will need in order to answer my research question includes data surrounding all care the individuals receive in the nursing home, including wound care provided, wound care orders, pressure ulcer prevention methods utilized, all results relating to the active pressure ulcer including results of improving wound, but also deterioration in the wound. Reports of all infections that occur in these participants will also be needed. All of this data will be documented in the EMAR for researchers to collect. Electronic medical records or EMR’s, are routinely collected data sources that contain standard medical and clinical data gathered during medical care in an individual location of a practice, clinic, or other medical setting (Mc Cord & Hemkens, 2019). In my particular research project, I believe utilizing EMR’s to collect data needed to answer my research question is the best method.
