Healthcare
policy and economics directly impacts my nursing practice on a day-to -day
basis. As I have evolved in my nursing practice more over the years, I have
realized how heavily my nursing practice is impacted by the policies that are
implemented. Understanding the policymaking process, nurses are able to
advocate and be more involved with better standards of care. I hope to be more
involved with the policymaking process.
In
my current organization, I work in an Emergency Room where I communicate with
our educator often to improve on situations that cause a delay or impact
patient care. In the ER, everything is fast paced, and interventions are time
sensitive. By improving in areas of fall-outs, patients can receive
patient-centered and time sensitive care that improves the odds of a positive
outcome.
In
my current organization, I have the opportunity to work with management and
educator to be a voice for patient health equity and advocacy. Our team
communicates efficiently with a team approach to foster a safer environment.
There have been recent changes at this hospital, and policies are constantly
being updated. Policymaking remains a multidisciplinary task where many
different roles are involved. Our organization recently implemented having a
pharmacist in ED to answer medications questions, home medications, and
assisting in preparing high-risk medications. This change has been helpful.
Time sensitive medications and sepsis workups have been more efficient. As
policies and standards of care continue to improve, our hope is for a patient-centered,
safe, and quality healthcare environment.

one app, software system, or other use of technology that promotes population

One
app that is used and easily accessible to the public is the Teladoc app or any
telehealth app. This app is used for telehealth and when you cannot get into a
facility fast enough, telehealth is a good route to go. However, in most jobs,
this option is available to be able to speak with a provider quickly and
prevents waiting in long ER lines and you are able to tell them your issues
right away. Telehealth is a great tool and way of healthcare today. I
personally have used an app as this, and it is really convenient if you feel
bad in the middle of the night and cannot make it to the physical building.
These apps are also used in the primary care offices as well, so that way
providers can still connect with their patients for care without having to physically
be present. Often times, audio or by camera can be utilized, depending on care.
These providers are able to take the information given to them and prescribe,
educate, and refer you go to your local hospitals or urgent care if symptoms
are worse than what they can manage.
Furthermore,
health literacy plays an important factor as well in this type of service.
Simply, even though some populations may or may not know that this available,
the elderly population for instance may not be technology savvy. In this
instance, these apps may not be ideal for every population. Particularly, you
have to set up these apps with emails, passwords, etc. This could be very
confusing and time consuming for some, but a good way of immediate healthcare
for some populations who are on the go often, or even some people who may not
get sick as much; however, ethical issues are another problem to consider.
There are HIPPA laws and regulations that are put in place so that medical
information is not shared without consent, and one is protected by law if
compromised. This helps protect the community across the healthcare
platform.
In my line of
work, we do telehealth with providers at time if there is a staffing issue and
it is a really great tool. The providers call in and speak with the patient,
get a synopsis of their history via their charts and the nurses do a thorough
assessment, vitals, and gather primary information needed to get their meds. If
the provider deems that there are any issues, they make their judgement and say
if they can be seen or not. They are there to answer any questions or advice.
It is amazing to know that these apps exist and someone medical can be just a
call away if needed.
