For your second written assignment you will select a disorder that interests you or that you have personal experience with. Any disorder defined as a Personality or Nuerodevelopmental & Disruptive Disorder as described within the DSM-V-TR is permissible. You will find a list below of the disorders that are permissible for this clinical paper.
Overview:
Students are to choose a diagnosis then write a clinical research paper identifying DSM-V-TR criteria for diagnosis and how these apply to behavior exhibited in an individual. For subject matter (in lieu of using a family member or friend), you will need to choose one character from a movie to diagnose. If you use real life examples, i.e., someone you know, please do not use real names. Change the name(s) to protect privacy. Additionally: you may NOT use characters whose mental illness is the subject of the film/show/book, i.e., talking about Dustin Hoffman’s Autism in Rain Man or Sam’s Autism in Atypical.
PAPER CRITERIA:
1. Give a description of the behaviors your subject is displaying – this should be a narrative format describing their life.
2. Identify the formal diagnosis you believe the subject should receive according to DSM-V-TR criteria AND relate the above stated behaviors to explain why the client meets the criteria.
3. Also include a proposed Treatment Plan for the individual. Please be specific. For example, just saying the client would benefit from “talk therapy” does not cut it! List what topics and the order you may address them with the client. Again, you will not be graded on clinical accuracy, but rather application of counseling types, medication evaluations and community services might be valuable for the client.
4. Minimum of 1500 words – 6 to 7 pages
WRITING ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES:
1. WORD file or compatible word processing program
2. Word/Page count – see #4 above
3. Times New Roman, size 12 font
4. Double spaced
5. 1” margins
6. Cover page with name and course notated.
7. In-text citations
8. Reference page
As this is a clinical paper, please keep the tone of the paper professional (watch over-generalization and excessive opinions and judgments). I am looking for clear, clinical supporting evidence for grading purposes, so make sure you meet full diagnostic criteria for each subject. See rubric in syllabus for point breakdown. Examples of this paper are available in the course shell on Moodle.
