April 27, 2024

Schedule a phone or in-person interview with a manager or other official who works in the infection control department at your facility or a local organization (IN NORTH CAROLINA). There may not be a specific department for infection control but there should be at least one individual who knows about or handles infection control for a facility. This is typically the person who accounts for antibiotic resistance and spread of disease/infection in the facility as examples.
NOTE: During COVID-19, the role of mitigating the spread of infectious disease is likely being added to many different job roles. You are welcome to interview someone that works to decrease the spread of infectious disease within a variety of settings, such as in-patient healthcare, outpatient healthcare, local/state public health department, nursing home, community center or gym, homeless shelter, emergency food provider, farm/agriculture producer, or many others. This individual cannot be within athletics at Appalachian State University.
Submit the name and contact information for your Infection Control Interview by the due date outline on AsUlearn. Include the name, role / title, area of expertise, organization, email, and phone number. Include the date and time of the interview, if possible.
Complete a 1.5-2 page summary of your interview to upload through this link by April 29. The summary can be written in question and answer format.
Instructions: Use 12 pt font, 1 inch margins, and be sure to include answers (from your interviewee) to the following questions:
Name of facility/organization and general information about the facility (size/number of people served, who/what community they serve, type of care/services provided to the community).
Name, title, and department of the individual you are interviewing about infection control.
What is their job description or what are they tasked with doing specifically?
What are the key/top 3-4 diseases/infections/issues that they track in the facility?
How do they track or monitor these?
Do they do tests and/or monitor certain pieces of data that the facility collects?
How often does this information get collected?
Does it have to be reported and if so, to who?
How has this process or information changed as a result of COVID-19?
Do they monitor or examine state and national data to compare against their own data for the facility? For example, do they use CDC data or is there some major reporting site to see how similar facilities are tracking?
What type of training have they received?
What other information is helpful to know?
Include a 1-paragraph reflection of your interview. What surprised you? How will you apply this information to your future career plans?
