The paper must be 3 -pages, typed, double-spaced, and meet the definition of critical, college-level,
writing. You ARE REQUIRED to include quotes from any assigned text(s) you write about. Include
page numbers for citations of course materials (articles and books—if it’s a website, then there is no
page number). The format should follow basic college style: Use italics for titles of books (e.g. Palo
Alto: A History of California, Capitalism and the World). Use quotes for titles of articles or book chapters
(e.g. “Blood That Trots Young” from Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism and the World). For
quotes longer than three lines, indent and single space (it’s not necessary to use quotation marks when
you indent quotations this way: the formatting indicates that it is a quote). You can simply put the
page number in parentheses at the end of a quote, e,g, (65). If you do not indicate the source of your
quote before the quote itself, you can include that information in parentheses with the page number,
e.g. (Harris, 65). If the source you are using is from a file, whether PDF or audio, without traditional page
numbers, you do not have to indicate the page numbers (just the source and the author). If you use any outside
sources (not assigned in the class), you are required to cite them with a full citation in a footnote.
You are NOT required to include a formal Bibliography or Works Cited. It is okay to go over 3-
pages, it is NOT okay to go under 3-p ages. I have to grade you down for anything less than a full 3-
pages. (Note: I would avoid suspiciously large headers.)
1. I want you to reflect on the work you’ve done in this class over the first half of the semester.
What part of that work has been most important to you? It’s okay to say “I” in this
assignment (you can still be critical and reflective while using that word). Everyone needs to
cite (that means use quotes) from Malcom Harris’ Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism
and the World in their paper. It is entirely up to you how many citations or quotes from this
work you will need to use in your paper, depending on what you choose to write about.
To clarify further, you can write about anything we studied in this course. At a minimum, you
should include a meaningful and substantive use (citations or quotes) from Harris’ book in
some form. If you want to focus on Solnit’s work, it’s fine to include quotes from her work,
as well. If you want to focus on Ruth Asawa,General Magic, Native Peoples, anything we
studied, it’s fine to focus on any of that material within the parameters specified above. You
are free to write about as many things as you want to write about. This is still a criticalpaper.
But I want to give you the freedom to teach me what you have learned in this class (so far).
Feel free to write about what has most impacted you in the course.
