Each group will be given a ethical dilemma case scenario to research, analysis and solve using the six step decision making model outline in Chapter 6, ”
Your group outline paper should be approximately 700-800 words (not including your case scenario) highlighting your findings using the six steps decision making model for your ethical/legal case scenario.
I recommend your group use the modified the worksheet below. This is from Chapter 6, pg 61, Ethics and Law in Dental Hygiene, Phyllis L. Beemsterboer. The added information for each step is to help guide your group through the six-step decision making process.
Example of an Ethical Dilemma outline is on pg 59-60, Chapter 6.

Step 1: Identify the Ethical Dilemma or Problem
Describe the dilemma/ problem.
Who are the primary dental office members involved in ethical dilemma? (the dental hygienist is the person experiencing the dilemma)
What are some of the concerns surrounding your topics?
What is the issue? Is the person/dental hygienist being asked to do something he/she believes is wrong (unethical) or in conflict with the rights of the patient? Write in paragraph form, 1 to 2 paragraphs
Step 2: Collect Information
List and explain the pertinent information that can help solve the ethical dilemma/problem. Research the information needed to solution to the dilemma/problem? Are there any legal issues involved in the dilemma/problem.
For legal concerns in regards to the dentist or dental auxiliary, refer to the California Dental Practice Act and/or State of California laws. List and explain the necessary information for each concern.
Step 3: State the Options
List and explain two to three different options to solve the dilemma/problem. One of the options can’t be to do nothing. List and explain the needed information for each option.
Step 4: Apply the Ethical Principles
What are the ethical principles, questions or concerns the dental hygienist faces?
each option given in Step 3, list and explain all the ethical principles that are being compromised in the case study. Focus on the following ethical principles: autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. For ethical values and concepts concentrate on paternalism, confidentiality, and informed consent. Each ethical principle, value and/or concept needs to be written in paragraph form with a detailed explanation of how or why it pertains to the case study and the solution.
Step 5: Make the Decision
State your decision. Decide which is the best option from Step 3 for solving your dilemma and state why.
Step 6: Implement the Decision
Explain how you will implement your decision.
