These are the assignment details:
There must be a minimum of 8 peer reviewed articles in this paper. Information can also come from contempory news websites.
In text citations are necessary, and a reference page as well in APA format.
The format I wouuld like it to be is Majpr Theme 1 being a historical analysis of college sports gambling, exploring prevalent cases (for example the kentucky basketball scandal). Major theme 2 should talk about contemporary and current issues revolving around college and sports gambling, especially how atheltes are involved. Theme 3 should talk about the factors that contribute to athletes gambling and gambling issues.
Choosing a Topic – Please choose an area of sport history that corresponds
with those discussed in this course (e.g., civil rights movement, early
foundations of sport, gender equity, amateurism in intercollegiate athletics,
gambling in Intercollegiate athletics etc.)
The topic I am choosing is Gambling Issues Within College Athletics
I.
Introduction – (1
– 2 pages)
i. You
should have this heading included in your paper in the left margin in bold
print.
b.
State the Problem/Topic Under
examination (1.5 pages)
i. Like in
the songs we love so, this is your hook or the chorus – it’s what we remember
most of a song. By this I mean you want to capture the reader’s attention.
Demonstrate to them the importance of your research problem and why we
should care about it. You can use statistics from the articles you have
collected to help support your key points. I would write this after I read my
articles.
IDEAS
TO CONSIDER FOR APPROACH:
a.
you can offer a contemporary example here as well as the history of your topic.
Think of it as you are building a crescendo or building the climax. You may
start with describing the problem given its history. Then BAM, land the plane
with “Today this still remains……For example….”
and hit em’ with your popular examples. You can us peer reviewed as well
as reputable popular sport sources, e.g. sports illustrated. If you approach it in this way, I would spend
1.5 pages on helping to illuminate the problem.
b.
Another
way you can set up your paper is with 2-3 contemporary examples of your
problems using the popular press. ESPN, Sports
Illustrated, Sporting News, Undefeated, etc. I like to use dramatic examples
when I take this approach. Think of it like “click bait”
c.
State the purpose of your research
paper. (1 – 2 Sentences)
i. Your
purpose statement is more than likely similar to the title of your paper. For
example, if the title of my paper is “The Social Construction of Race and Identity in The
African American Community 1900-1940, My purpose statement would be, “The
purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the themes that emerge from current
literature that focuses on how racial identities were constructed in the African
American community between 1900-1940. Got
It? In other words, you simply restate your title as your purpose statement.
d.
Present your road map. This is the
organization of your paper (2 – 3 Sentences that appear
AFTER your purpose statement)
i. You are
now landing the introduction plane. You should begin this section
by stating, “This paper will be organized around the following themes/topics…” These are the themes or topics that emerged
from your review of literature on the subject. You will list them after “…
following themes that include:…..”
However, you need to survey/skim/read the articles/chapters you have
selected and identify which factors have the researchers stated in the articles
you have read influence your research problem.
In other words, ask yourself, “Of the peer reviewed research
articles that I have read, what are some of the factors that researchers have
identified (overall) as issues that contribute to the problem? What are their recommendations?”
List them and this will be the themes that you address in the body of your
paper. Select about 3 themes/topics/concerns/ that
seem to be a consistent message throughout the articles reviewed. See Below
II.
Major Theme 1
a. Introduce Main Theme 1 – You
can offer a historical sketch or overview of how this part of the issues came
to be. Was there an influential or important moment you can use to set this
section up?
b. Subtopic
1 (1.5 – 2 pages)
– the name of each theme/topic should be in bold or italics in the left
margin.
c. Subtopic
2 (2 pages) – Subtopics
one and two cover what the literature says about the subject.
d.
Land the plane: Conclusion Paragraph
III.
Major Theme 2
a. Introduce Main Theme 2 – Again,
you might set up your paper with examples that help you outline the problem
b. Subtopic
1 (2 pages) – what has the literature said about this
generally?
c.
Subtopic 2 (2
pages)
d.
Land the Plane: Conclusion
Paragraph
IDEAS FOR ADDRESSING EACH MAJOR
THEME:
You
don’t have to do it strictly the way I am suggesting above. You can use our
course topics, as I said in class, to frame your section, maybe you layout and
discuss an example that is representative of your problem and integrate peer
reviewed articles into your discussion of the case. A major theme approached in
this way may look like Theme 3 below. Q: Can I use both strategies
listed above and below to write my paper?
Ans: Yes! In fact, if deploying both strategies,
if you use the method below you can make illustrative examples or key moments their
own section in your paper that represents the overall topic of your paper..
IV.
If needed, Major Theme 3 (You may need it)
a. Introduce Main Theme 3 – How
do you introduce it? Start by telling us the problem. Why do things like this
happen? (sociology journals can help here) Then you might say “There are three
examples that help us to better understand (Insert issue here e.g. employment
discrimination and women, integration and sport) they include: 1). ____ 2). ____,
3) ____
b. Moment
or Example 1 (1.5 pages) – find a few articles
that offer perspective about each case.
c. Moment
or Example 2 (1.5
pages)
d. Moment
or Example 3 (1.5 pages)
e.
Land the plane: Conclusion
paragraph
V.
Conclusion (1 –
2 pages)
a. Restate
the purpose of your project and the problem
b. Select
one or two major points from each Main
Theme that supports the statement of the problem under
investigation. Here is where you can interject your insights that are grounded
in research and not solely on your opinions. Dedicate about 1-2 paragraphs
for each main theme recap. After the recap, through in your unique sauce based
on what you learned. What are your insights? What do we need to do moving
forward?
c. In the
final paragraph summarize with a quick and final overview of the research
problem/topic.
Peer reviewed journals that might work
well for your paper, although not limited to the following:
1.
The Journal of Sport and Social Issues
2.
College Athletics and the Law – You will
have to use Interlibrary loan for this is you see something you like. It
usually takes a few days. If you have friends at other schools, ask them to
grab it for you if you can’t wait.
3.
Your course readings and books can also
be used for definitions of concepts.
at the end of the paper, could you also include the links to all the sources used, so that I can reference back to them
